I was originally worried there wouldn't be enough clearance behind the spool, but after going out and pre-tensioning there's tons of room since it's wound so much tighter.

I just ran it through from the mounting point on the bumper to the side of the winch and then through one of the openings beside the radiator on the left side of the vehicle. I used the mounting bolt for the battery tray to attach the relay, and ran the wires for the switch through the cab firewall using the same opening where the large rubber grommet is for the other harnesses.

Tip though: just run the wires to the side of the grommet (between the grommet and the bare metal) - not through it - it's a lot easier.

Also, if your bumper is not fully affixed yet, make sure you've got the light aimed as you want it in the mount, since once everything is put back together it will be a pain (if not impossible) to adjust.

Good call. It's all still boxed up. I plan to read the instructions 100 times over as well as read the modifications needed for the winch before actually installing it. I want to do it one time!

Dang you guys are lucky, on the smittybilt you have to grind off the stock hook if you want to remove it.

If someone wants to send me an ultrahook for christmas, that would be okay too, just let me know

That's what you get when you pay ~$600 more for the Warn than the Smittybilt...the ability to throw part of it away. ;)

Well- I went a bit further, installed a tacomapro bussman RTMR. This unit allows for the prewiring of 5 relayed accessories and offers one 7 wire bundle you send through the firewall (using the grommet just behind the brake booster). That 7 wire unit provide ma both the 12v + and gnd for the switch, as well as the lead back to the accessory. Once installed all I had to do is wire my switch to it and the positive lead to the rtmr... and when I find more places to add switches, I'll add more lights!

I don't reccomend this. Eventually, vibration can/will chew through he wire and short on the sharp edge of the firewall. Get an exacto knife and get hack of that grommet proper.

Agreed. It's an inelegant solution unless you wrap the wires with some additional protection or put some stripping on the firewall edge itself....like a beer coozie. ;)

That's what I meant! ;) It's only inelegant if you DON'T use the beer coozie! Coozies are the new standard - they totally one-up the pieces of pool-noodle I use all over the place for similar applications.

I'll be the first to admit the Smittybilt is hands-down a better value. I bought the Warn for mostly sentimental reasons - when I was a kiddo and used to salivate over the Quadratec catalog Warn was sort of the marquee brand.

So....I'll be thinking about you too when I have to shell out another $100 for for a wireless controller when you got one standard. ;)

Seriously! They're closed-cell foam and super useful! I use them to pad heavy loads when I'm roof loading, and a short section also makes a great lumbar support. I keep a couple in my gear cage at work for dudes to take sections of if they need 'em.

Also, they are great for beating my kids/pets.
