Bought a 2016 Tacoma new in 2016. I have 93,000 miles and just had my 90,000 mile service done at the dealership. Two months later I noticed a miss. I had it towed to Joe Myers Toyota in Houston. I was informed That I have to have the passenger side head replaced for a cost of $6000. Anybody else have this problem? The mechanic says mine is the third one.

Back in 85 my 4 cylinder toyota had an engine failure with the key on the front of the crank shearing. The crank had to be inspected by the regional rep before the engine could authorized to be repaired. Toyota deemed it a metallurgical failure, saying it was the first time seeing it on their 84 engines. They were pretty good about the entire deal fixing the truck within a week and giving me a rental.

Seems 6 grand could buy a nice used engine, harness, transmission, transfer case, and axles.

Not sure about how common that is, but I would replace with a good used engine and not do that repair. Unless you really trust them, I think I would also get a second opinion before doing it.

With all the gen3 taco's built there has to be some good used engines from wrecks hanging around for lots less.

a ' miss ' doesnt necessarily mean a new head

there are a doz reasons for a ' miss '
    a- bad spark plug
    b- bad coil pack

a different doz reasons to replace a head
    a- valves
    b-head gasket

tho im not there U haven't recounted what the mech definitively found broken

    in Ur engine

They usually don’t just tell you, you need a new head when your under a factory warranty unless you do. Sure it may just be a valve. But they don’t have the techs usually do that kind of work anymore. They send out a new or reman’ed head to swap, and the defective one gets sent back to the factory for repair/replacement.

Thank you all for your input. The tech originally replaced an injector because he found low compression in cylinder three and five. The service advisor told him rather than to chase down each individual injector to pull and check the head. They have ordered a new head but it’s a week out. I will be calling the dealer where I bought the truck for a second opinion.

At 6k I would shop around. Find a shop that specializes in Toyotas.

replacing injectors is Not the procedure for ' low compression '

a leak down or compression check would have been in order

the service advisor should at least let the mechanic find out exactly whats wrong

U may need a new head after all.................... NOT because U have bad injectors

    valves
    head gasket
spark plugs..........surprising how many are loose sometimes NOT even finger tight!!

1/2 the svc advisors at the dealership couldnt change a tyre or oil& filter in less than an hour
let the mechanic do his job instead of Starbux explanation

I'd also shop around if that's your first estimate, that's a lot of cash!

sorry man, the SA is not someone I'd ever take mechanical advice from. Most are nice ppl where I go but technical is not something I'd call any one them, I'd sooner take advice from the kid doing oil changes.

Around here we have a few engine machine shops that have everything to rebuild any cylinder head. I know a few dealers that send their stuff to one of these guys instead of replacing the entire head....that is unless its still in warranty.

With as many of these trucks as are out there, it shouldn't be too hard to find one that was totaled with a perfectly good engine in it, perhaps with a lot fewer miles than your has. I would venture you could find one and get it installed (pretty straight forward install) for significantly less than $6k.

That's what I thought. I have paid a lot for expensive high flow aluminium heads before, and they were like 2k fully built. Not Tacoma heads though. OEM heads used to run like $200. Doesn't seem like you could possibly put that many labor hours in it to get to 6k.
