GM dropped the displacement of the bread and butter 5.7L V8 to 5.3L.

Lots of bitching and moaning ensued.

Look how well the 5.3L has been doing.

I remember seeing this funny thing awhile back, it was like two wheels and they had teeth or something like that and it made them spin at different rates...

Oh and in the Q&A session the smart guy with the glasses talked about something called a "gear ratio" and said something about how it had changed - the number he said for the 2016 was bigger than the number he said for the old trucks.

Oh my poor little head is all a kerfluffle now with this techno-mechanic talk!

That Hilux is the size of 1Gen truck and that 2.7 is a truck engine. What your point ?

Really, where is the 500 lbs ft gas engine today. Cars. No trucks have gas torque monsters any more, all diesel, which make sence.

Current taco tops out over 100, and can tow 5500 lbs, why the need and argument for more hp or torque? Sure it's nice but you have to compromise elsewhere.

There's much more evidence that it will be better than current and there is no evidence it will be worse. It could be, yes, but since this is toyota were talking about. It's kind of like applying for a loan and if the "this engine will fail because reasons" attitude were held by your bank, you wouldn't ever get a damn loan no matter how good your credit score is.

Let toyota do their job. If they thought this engine would be worse in any way they wouldn't put it in the tacoma.

Question for all of you professing your love for diesel.

Have you been in a D4D Hillux? or seen/heard one?

They are louder in reality than on youtube. I was in Chile SA recently and am happy to keep my V6 after seeing every small truck there rolling around with diesels. They are cool, and that turbo is nice  BUT they are more complicated, dirtier, and louder.

    IMO

well since no one has brought this up.

could it be the reason Toyota went this route with the otto w/ Atkinson cycle is to save gas instead of how the usa makers use cylinder deactivation?

i personally don't want to deal with the headaches of that setup in my Toyota.

    ------

diesel is that cheap? we are at $3.29 gal/diesel vs $2.19 gal/regular.

yeah that diesel option is a no brainer when its used as a mall crawler /sarcasm

edit: and btw the warden likes her truck, and she's happy using it as a mall crawler or whatever else she decides to use it for except off the pavement. i don't think it has really seen a dirt road so to speak in 3 years.

When I last looked here gas was $2.40 and diesel $3.60, 50% more for diesel! LOL the Duramax and Cummins guys are fuming mad. I wouldn't buy a truck with one of these new EPA diesels if it were $2,000 *less* than a modern gasoline engine.

As for those saying it's a minivan now because it has a smaller engine, do you live under a rock? I could have told you the engine was going to be smaller. You don't need a big engine to produce better numbers. You're focusing on the only number that doesn't matter. There are 3 more that will blow us away.

As for the comforts, need I say it again? The tacoma needed them and it got them. If it didn't you would complain they aren't doing enough to it.

What year is that Hilux than? Unless its one of the brand new ones older Hiluxes were much smaller than 2Gen trucks. I drive 2007 D4d Hliux when in Europe and its the size of Double cab of 1Gen. Their Size is nowhere near my 2 gen DCLB.
Truck Engine - Designed specifically for Toyota commercial application aka Trucks. Different design just like 1GR is just like 1FZ was, just like 2UZ and 3UR are
2GR - is not one of them.

    A little a this, a little a that...
All automakers need to do more with less these days. Toyota makes great engines. I'm sure the 3.5 will be a reliable engine with numbers comparable to the competition. Wake me when there's real info out there.

There is a Toyota engine plant here in Huntsville, Alabama.

They make the V8 for the Tundra.

I couldn't care less about the HP, as long as it was somewhat close to the current figures. Longetivty and MPG efficiency is all that matters to me.
