Toyota is probably thinking hybrid bc there is currently no real plus to buying a midsize, other then fitting in tighter places. The Tacoma gets less or equal mpg as a full size with way less power and room.

It will undoubtedly have different tuning for truck use. Not to mention lower cost bits than either of the above vehicles.

    My guess is ~280 hp.

lol - if you're cross shopping a tacoma that isn't out yet, with a raptor that won't be out til the end of 2016, then I think you're not really shopping at all.

This is more in line with my thinking too. I'm guessing the final figure is 285hp with higher MPG figures and future models will have higher hp numbers as the more exotic components come down in cost and the segment heats up and gets more competition. It's possible that Toyota feels that things may heat up sooner than later and give us a truck with 295hp but at this point I doubt it as the competition isn't serious enough at this point. They're not losing massive amounts of market share & sales aren't stagnant at all so there's little to no motivation at this point. From a business standpoint giving us a truck with a ~340hp V6 makes no sense. Don't get me wrong, I would like to see it but what we'd like to see and what makes the company money are two entirely different things. Why do you think we still don't have a diesel available? Simple, it's a niche market and won't make the company money.

    Lets recap.
    2gr-fxe - crappy 3.5 L V6 check...

    5.7 V8 as option - not check.
Diesel as option - not check.

    Way to go Toyota.
Who is going to be stupid enough to buy truck with 3.5 L V6 from Hybrids ?
    No Turbo no nothing.
Towing anything with that thing its going to be a dog. people are going have to install sail or to climb hills.
All that Horsepower with out low end torque is pointless.

It's 'crappy' if it makes the same amount of hp and torque with a sizable increase in power and let's assume little to no increase in MSRP? The V6 is horribly outdated and historically inefficient for it's displacement. It's not much of a stretch to assume they can get more power and torque at a cost of less fuel used and less weight from a properly setup 3.5L.

18 people would actually buy a V8 Tacoma.

15 people would actually buy a diesel powered Tacoma.

1.8 gazillion people buy a Tacoma w/a V6 in it.

99% of statistics are made up.

The point is we really don't know any of the numbers or power plants that will be available so why make such absolute statements at this point in the game? Calm down.

One would assume that when they did their testing, they made sure that the new engine/transmission combo performed at least as well and most likely better, than the outgoing 4.0 with the 5 speed and achieved better MPG at the same time.

    I'm sure it will be fine . . .

Sure would be nice to see the torque numbers go up to 330 ft-lbs. That would be hitting it out of the park. From what I know the DI motors get the HP up to 305HP plus, but that's at over 6000 RPM, and the torque numbers are not an improvement over the 4.0L.

Not a point, sure they can take 2L 4 cylinder and turn into 1000 HP monster but its not going to last very long.
Point is to get better engines that last even longer not go backwards.
Its 3.5L with direct injection from Toyota Highlander H. .
Neither is good nor long lasting.

+2. This isn't Honda we're talking about. No more belts in the current Toyota lineup.

you really think they would put an engine in this truck that cannot tow as well or better than the last generation/current competitors? don't knock it til you try it, or at least until somebody/anybody tries it.

Arb front bumper, warn winch, All Pro rear bumper, OME up front, OME and All Pro Standard in Back, ARB locker, 34 x 10.5 KO2's, 17" Level 8 Trackers, and fancy single piece driveshaft.
In the Q&A, the lead engineer said that the front got longer by 3 inches or so to meet future crash standards. More crush space.

The actual engine compartment looks slightly shorter to me, so I hope the back seat legroom gained a couple inches.

i'm sure to stay competitive there will be more rear leg room at least in the double cabs. i'm interested to see what if any changes happened to the rear seats in the access cabs.
