You guys are all jumping to assumptions.

This is not a "car" motor... it just so happens to be used in cars.... its all based on the same block and design as the 1GR in our current tacos.

Its VERY likely that the new motor in the tacoma will NOT be the 2GR-FSE or the 2GR-FXE... but likely a new designation 2GR-XXX. As it seems like it is a blend of both. You get the direct injection from the FSE but the atkinson cycle from the FXE. The otto/atkinson cycle is all done by variable valve timing which these trucks including our current 1GR have and toyota has done a very good job at.

so stop ASSUMING, and wait for figures to come out before bashing it. Ill be willing to bet it makes significantly more hp and torque over the same super broad range that the 1GR does and does so making a good amount more of mpg's

That's a good bet. Tuned for the truck application hopefully it has more torque. Looking at the redline on the interior pics it looks like the redline is lower than the 2GR-FSE which redlines at 6400 RPM which would be peak HP. So a lower redline means more torque than the car applications.

Be sweet if Toyota offer TRD Supercharger.

1gr is Toyptas truck engine, 2gr is their car engine. Not much to discuss here.
Toyota will not redesign engine for tacoma. They never did. Tacoma always was getting the same truck engines as other toyota trucks up until now.
There is only one line that's 3.5 V6 and only one with Atkinson cycle.
That's 2GR-FXE. They may tune it any way they want but that's still highlander engine, in the meantime 4runners will get 4L and 4.6 V8
Toyota turning tacoma into pussy wagon. They may had loyal customers but only stupid person would trade truck with engine from Land Cruiser for a truck with engine from sup top Camry.

Agreed, but exhaustive testing could take a year or two?

Imagine a 3.5 putting out close to 400 ponies!

if i am not mistaken.... the 2GR-FXE DOES NOT have the D-4S direction injection. so either toyota is lieing to us that the new tacoma has direction injection.... or they took best of the FSE and the FXE and mated them together (as really the atkinson cycle in the case of these motors is simply playing with the valve timing)

Here is an assumption, they are using the atkinson cycle engine because they plan to introduce hybrid power. All gas/electric hybrids in production have this design of engine.

They did say "all new 3.5 V6" so does that mean "all new" or "new to the Tacoma"?

I'd be inclined to think the former, otherwise why not just quote the HP/torque/MPG numbers of the existing engines?

This is 100% absolutely not the 2GR-FXE. It is an all new engine that can operate in both Otto and Atkinson cycle.

Yup! Like Fords 3.5 that's going into the '17 Raptor! (Which looks pretty awesome too!)

Seriously - if the Taco OR is going to cost 38K, the Raptor gets awfully tempting. It's a stunning machine. With a 10 speed auto, turbo V6, and 500 lb weight loss, the mileage might not actually be that bad.

How do you even know it will be a 2GR? Just because it is 3.5L? We have no idea at this point!

My wife agrees. She thinks the new Tacoma is sexy, and that it is indeed a "pussy wagon." I prefer her interpretation to yours. :D

I have a feeling the Raptor, with its new expensive body and bigger shocks will be over 60k MSRP

this is so damn very true!

At this point all we know is its a 3.5L D-4S direct injected motor with otto and atkinson cycles..... beyond that... no idea... it could be an entirely different motor / block.

Everyone acting like they've seen the numbers is delusional. All we know is 3.5 Atkinson-Otto. But when the new engine comes out I'm sure you'll find something wrong with it anyway.

Well......This "Atkinson" cycle allows for more efficiency at a constant RPM, like at cruse on the freeway, or under low loading situations. Easier, and more reliable to do with valve timing, rather than cylinder deactivation. To add, not only Hybrids have this type of engine system. Mazda's "Sky Active" is an "Atkinson" cycle engine.

The explanation of multiterrain select sounded awfully gimmicky. Throttle mapping for those who can't modulate the go pedal themselves.

Its interesting watching the speculation on the new engine. The current 4.0 feels day to day enough but throw an extra adult, kid, dog and luggage to support them all for a two night stay and driving in traffic that constantly varies between 60-70mph feels like a chore. Hopefully the extra power and new tranny address this...and tgr absymmal mpg.
