having a throttle that ramps up slower, when off road, is an asset. If the tech. is there, use it.

Exactly. Ive driven in vehicles that have different throttle maps for different terrain, and its great.

Strange to me they wouldn't at least put the Highlander's 185hp 2.7l in the Taco as a base motor. 159hp is pretty weak when Chevy has a 200hp 2.5l as base in the Colorado.

that would be interesting. wouldnt be hard, they already have yaw and aceleorometers in the truck. Would not be hard to code it in. have the acelorometer look at the values, and see if locking the tires more increases decel values or if letting up and doing abs would be more beneficial.

And like the person above.... alls we know about this motor is 3.5L atkinson-otto cycle motor with D-4S direct injection.

My vote is still the 2GR-FSE as a base with different cam systems to allow for a wider range of timing to allow for atkinson cycle driving... cus thats all it is.

It is a new 3.5L V6. They didn't say it was just for Tacoma. Tacoma is just getting it first. I expect we'll eventually see this engine in the 6th gen 4Runner. I think we'll see a heavy push for weight reduction on the next 4Runner* and the 3.5L will be a nice fit for a 4Runner that is more in the weight range of a Tacoma.

    * We already know that Toyota is putting aluminum hoods, lift gates, and even doors on the RX350 that is due out this summer. I'm certain that line of thinking is being used on the 4Runner to keep it viable.

So do you feel confident we will see a 6th gen 4runner? Some rumors indicate it's not even on the table?

Boost in sales of the refreshed 5th gen, death of the FJ, and new powertrains being developed for the truck sibling make me think the 4Runner will live for another gen. Toyota surely sees the value of keeping it around for no other reason than bringing in new Toyota fans. The 4Runner was my first Toyota and I'm on my 4th Toyota now. I'm certain I'll have another 4Runner or possibly a Taco down the road. Like they say, you never get rid of your 4Runner; you are just between 4Runners.

Glad the layout is the same. I'm always afraid one day they will design engines so that only shops with special equipment can touch them.

I can see those extra inches they added on for crash protection standards.

It kinda of looks like there is a shroud around the alternator. I wonder if it is beltless. The Prius is completely beltless = less to fail.

lol its funny how much bluet is huffing and puffing in a few thread I think about this engine is a hybrid engine.

the only thing I see is a engine that is primarily an otto cycle with a few Atkinson features.

the 2GR-FXE is a full Atkinson engine that is used exclusively in certain hybrid vehicles that have a battery pack. since the primary torque is generated via a electric wheel, whereas the Tacoma is using a gas engine to develop torque.

you lose the efficiency of the Atkinson cycle when you need to do heavy work or get moving from a stand still. this is where the electric wheel comes into play on hybrids and then the Atkinson engine takes over at highway speed.

until they come out with official info, its just speculation minus the huffing of some people.

either way, I think Toyota hit all the points not on just the engine but everything else. the warden is super excited to trade in her 2012 and get a new Tacoma.

in the end and in Toyota's mind, the more new blood they get the better and she is on that band wagon.

Toyota is not going to cater to the 1-10% that hate this design/features so keep doing your thing

Completely agree, I think Toyota did a great job with the 3rd Gen! They added a lot of the features I saw listed here in the forums like dual climate, sun roof, heated mirrors, leather, tailgate lock, stronger frame, etc. Looks like Toyota was listening to us!

I also applaud Toyota for giving the Tacoma a lot of attention the past few years. Coming out with the facelift, then PRO models, and now a new Generation was pretty awesome to see as a long time fan of Tacoma's.

the MPG of the 4.0 is pretty standard. my lexus gs350 (with a 2gr) gets slightly better mileage. SLIGHTLY. Just enough to make up for the difference between regular and premium fuel. You surely smart enough to understad a pickup truck cannot return 4cyl civic MPG. Wait, put the 4cyl civic motor in it and you will, you will just have 20 second 0-60 times like a 1st gen 22r 4runner.

NoDak - how many of that 1-10% will buy the 3rd gen taco within a year of bitching, i say 50%! LOL.
