Dannyblues reply and thanks to fredgoodsell who posted that toyotas service bulletin TSB 0088-16 provides the dealer shop employees with a simple easy fix to the manual transmission getting stuck in gear problem. I will go back to my dealer and furnish them with this information to finally put an end to this infrequent but dangerous and aggravating shifting problem. All individuals with this problem should contact Toyota Headquarters at their Toyota customer service number and register their individual complaint so it will be documented. When you do you will receive a case number. Usually Toyota follows up by contacting your dealers shop manager and by sending a corporate field rep to the dealer to check your Tacoma himself. Good luck. Toyota HQ recently checked their recall and warranty enhancements records and told me I am the only one in the USA with the sticking shifter problem. The more of us that register the better the assistant will be to get this problem resolved. So I myself will offer the dealer the TSB-0088-16 service bulletin number in hopes this fixes the stuck shifter problem. Dannyblues

There was a huge thread on this. You are definitely not the only one in the USA that had this problem.

I luckily don't have it, but it was a well discussed issue here not too long ago

There is a TSB for this issue. Go to your dealer and they will fix it for you.

if Toyota is saying you're the only one with the sticking shifter problem, then there are two possibilities:
1 - you are currently, today, the only one showing in their system with that problem active before it is fixed and the status in their system changes to a closed case. but we're not sure what they're looking at.
2 - your dealer is full of it and acting like they know what they're talking about so you can be impressed with them knowing more than you.

they came up with a TSB because this was a rampant problem in the '16's. this was corrected for the '17's, although i think i've seen a report or two from early release '17 owners who had not gotten the fix on the assembly line yet. cannot be totally sure about that, however. the fix is a new and slightly smaller detent ball on the shifter. about as easy as you can get.

everyone knows about it, just get yourself fixed up and nevermind the unending dealer wisdom problem.

In case you didn't just get my reply I want to thank you for the information you provided. I've been back and forth to the dealer several times over seven months. Both Toyotas district corporate field rep and shop foreman old me I shifted improperly and as gooseing the gas that's a sensitive drive by wire system as I depressed the clutch and that I was responsible for the stuck shifter problem. I've never had shifter problems in the 29 years I've driven manual shift vehicles including semi tractor trailers. For anyone interested the fix for stuck shifter on a manual six speed is service bulletin: TSB-0088-16. Tanks much. Dannyblues

Yeah I'm trying patiently to get this stuck shifter problem resolved through Toyota. When you have problems with your vehicle it's very important to have it documented! Call Toyota customer service and you will be assigned a case number after which they will call your dealer shop. Following this you will get a call from your dealers service manager to set up an appointment to resolve your issue. Often your case manager from Toyota customer service will recall to see if you were actually contacted by your dealers service manager within two days or so and often it's necessary for them to send their corporate field service rep to meet at least with the shop foreman and service manager as well as you on the day of your appointment. Having customers with unresolved case numbers reflects very badly on the dealership. I mentioned this here as it seems you yourself may be having troubles with your automatic tranny. I had a new automatic Tacoma loaner for the day and I hated it. It was constantly shifting up and down six speeds. The manual is smoother and you can leave it in any gear you choose such as when anticipating stopped traffic ahead of a tall hill or curve. The automatic can't foresee that so it just keeps shifting away. I also found the automatic boring as hell. It's only my opinion so please don't take offense but I feel trucks just demand a manual transmission. I'm old and it's just a guy thing I guess. Men with trucks and hot cars drive nothing but manuals. Ladies drive automatic vehicles. Old school thinking. I know today even high end fast cars are paddle shifting automatics and may even be faster but personally I've driven only manuals for the past 29 years including sporty cars, semi tractor trailer rigs, large trucks, and motorcycles- all manual shift vehicles. When I drive an automatic my left foot is always searching for the clutch. Best of luck with your automatic and no hard feelings I hope from this old man and first time personal truck owner. I do not think too many 17s have the issue, think they changed to a different spring and ball or whatever was in that TSB.

You guys are lucky not to have the stuck shifter problem. All the dealer mechanics want to keep your Tacoma and drive it until they can duplicate the problem personally. That can take long drives of 60 miles or so for maybe two months and 1500 miles between occurances. When it does get stuck the first time it usually continues for at least a half hour or until you pull over and let the truck cool down. If you shift a lot it doesn't happen at all. Thanks for the well wishes. We are expecting a possible blizzard here with high winds and up to 14 inches of snow by Wednesday morning when I have the appointment to meet Toyotas big shot regional field rep to correct this. I'll be there on time. That's why I bought four wheel drive with a manual shift! Thanks and good luck to all you old school manual shift fans. Dannyblues

Hello, I am new to Tacoma world, I have a 2016 Tacoma trd sport 4x4 access can. I haven't had any major issues until today. I just surpassed the 10,000 mile marker, and my manual transmission started sticking, I'm going to take it in Saturday, and let them know about the tsb-0088-16, I ll keep everyone updated. Do you guys think it is safe to drive like under these circumstances?

What did you tell the dealer in order to make him receptive? I just went today to fix the problem, and they played the same old tune to me: they can't reproduce it in 15 minutes of drive (duh!), therefore, they cannot fix it.

They won't be able to replicate it. It took hours for mine to start sticking. I spoke to the shop manager and politely threatened legal action due to the vehicle being unsafe. In my case that was the honest truth since I had my family in the car, pulled out to pass, and couldn't downshift. It was scary.

They ordered the parts and fixed it.

The parts to repair the issue are under 50 bucks .
Not saying you should go out and buy them and change them out yourself ,thats why you have warranty , but some members here did this easy job , but , because like you , they were getting the run around
