I love everything about the new Taco except for the one thing we all look at as we drive. The number layout on the speedo and tach can only be described as AWFUL. they are a busy, sideways mess!! I hope they fix it so I can pull the trigger and buy one. No other Toyota product has such a horrible layout! Why butcher the new Tundra!?

They can't fix my drum brakes on my '13. (Been to Toyota several times)
Why would I want a '16 with the same 70s technology?

I agree. I tow a fair amount and to me, the Tacoma brakes aren't wonderful to begin with. Add a trailer (even with brake axles), and it's even worse. For how expensive these trucks are, drum brakes are not acceptable.

I agree but apparently after read about a conversion the drums do their job better than rear discs. It's been covered and the conversion has been done with subpar results IIRC

Not impressed at all. More electronics that I don't want. GoPro mount? LOL. Tailgate assist and lock that you can mod for $80. Front grill is hideous, though I do like the headlights. I much prefer the Gen2 interior and dash. New hot stamp process... sounds like marketing code for thinner metal. And where are the HP specs??? Seems more like an evolution as opposed to a revolution like Gen1 to Gen2. No Turbo Diesel. No rear disc brakes. No supercharged version. WTF?

    Just my $.02

Yes you can add them but having them factory is nice. Those are things people have been asking for and aftermarket cables often wear out. Everyone's been bashing the interior for years. They made a good move updating it. Have you researched hot stamping? It's stronger with less weight. The engine has not yet been tuned because (speculation) Toyota is waiting to see what the competition does OR not letting them knew what Toyota is doing. Toyota claimed to target highest tq/weight ratio in the segment. Diesel has been beat to death and there is plenty of reading material here if you don't know but in one word: emmisions. Disc brakes are not always better than drum.

With the new grill, headlights, tail lights and all the angled places on the body panels that used to have curves, the 2016 looks more like a "GMC Ram F150" than a Toyota Tacoma.

Dodge did something similar to the Dakota after 2005. It made the Dakota angluar and ugly, probably helped to kill the truck too. The 2012 Tacoma has nice smooth curves. That's one of the reasons I bought it. The 2016 is just too ugly for me. I hope Toyota comes to their senses and revises the design soon. :pout:

Depends on what you mean by "fix". I had to shoe freeze to the drum overnight on an offroad trip once, basically twisting the whole thing loose and breaking a spring and bending some of the internals the next morning when we got started.

After I got home, full rebuild with new shoes and springs, bent the bent parts back into spec, but it still occasionally squeaks and likes to come loose on adjustment, requiring me to check in on it every 6 months or so. It still "works", technically.

I can't imagine the price difference between drums and discs is more than a few dollars at this point, and maintenance of discs is so much easier. The continued rear drums on the 2016 are disappointing.

Again, the disc brake conversion someone did on the forum resulted worse than stock.

There are too many interrelated functions in a modern braking system to consider when making such a conversion. Was the master cylinder replaced with one with the proper sized pistons? Possibly. Was the proportioning valve replaced with one compatible with the rear discs? Maybe Was the ABS and other brake related programming of the computer adjusted for the rear discs? Probably not.

Back in the day you could replace the very inferior drum brakes on a '64-65 Chevelle with disc brakes and the proper master cylinder/vacuum diaphragm and only have to reprogram the brain foot interface of the driver. There's more to in now and evidently Toyota would rather spend its time and money on do-dads than on things of real substance. But maybe again I'm the only one who has a crappy pedal feel compared to my Hyundai Elantra Touring a $17K vehicle that I do not tow or haul with. Maybe I'm the only on who has made hard stops on dry pavement only to notice that there are only two black marks on the pavement and they came from the right and left front tires. Maybe I'm the only one? I don't know, I do know that the brake performance of my '07 Prerunner does not meet my expectations, best performance in class or not (not much competition in the "class" from a bunch of mediochre contenders).

If people are getting up to 275K out of rear shoes, its seems to me that they are not contributing much to stopping of the vehicle. Don't know how or where they drive but still seems like they aren't contributing. I haven't had the pleasure of having but one set of shoes on the back, I'm on the third set now at 110K due to repeated leaking inner oil seals, fixed twice under warranty and once on my dime. But that of course is another story.

True I understand that. Hm, maybe they just need to be adjusted? Idk.

I think it has something to do with spreading the love.

The 4.0 in the Tundra is dead. The FJ is dead. The 4.0 in the Tacoma is dead. They aren't going to continue to produce the 4.0 for the 4runner that sold 175k units last year.

Toyota will (in Chicago?) tell everyone that they are committed to body on frame SUVs, remind us of last year's cosmetic upgrade and then tell us all about the "new" 3.5 powering the 4runner with a line about commitment to quality and how it will be shared with the all new Tacoma.

I'm amazed at how many are upset by drum brakes being used, Like others have said disc is not always better in there rear. Yes they are older tech but the same could be said for leaf springs which have been around since the wagon, where's the outrage on that old tech?

    Kinda cool in person.

I like the redesign of the flares and the rear end.

The interior is pretty busy/gadget-y looking.

The frame is 100% second generation still from the looks of it. The front control arms and springs and shocks and inner fenders all look the same. The rear springs and shocks all look second gen still.

Same goes for the cab and the bed. Its still the same plastic shell and has the same track system and cubbies.

The Chevy ZR2 concept blows the Tacoma out of the water... King coil-over suspension, Duratracs, winch, Duramax 4 banger turbo diesel, widened flares, sliders, ect
