There is a change in VVT at around 3500 rpm, but it’s not the dedicated switch rpm for Atkinson/Otto.

From the man himself but over in the MT thread:

Isn’t the Atkinson to Otto changeover (and vice versa) accomplished by varying the valve timing, hence Atkinson IS VVT?

Yes, it's variable, there is no set RPM it's load/throttle based I believe.

Ok, but like I said previously, it happens AROUND 3500 rpm. I know it could be 3800, or 3200, but 3500 is a nice round reference number.

I know I’m not the only one that’s felt the changeover right around that point.

That's just the VVTI, like VTEC in a way

The Atkinson/Otto cycle is completely different. I'm not sure why you keep thinking it's a set RPM. Floor the truck from a stand still and it'll use the Otto cycle (not keep the intake open as long)

Is your truck a MT? In my 2016 MT, you could go WOT at, lets say 2000rpm, and feel the VVT change around 3500rpm. At WOT there is not any Atkinson happening, the VVT change at 3500 under heavy load is not Atkinson related. It IS VVT related, though.

If you’re towing or hauling extra weight, it’s not going to happen near the same rpm value.

FYI: Every dealership in America has two (2) pay rates for mechanics. One is called warranty, and the other is called customer pay (CP). One is paid by corporate and is lower (warranty), and the other is paid by the local dealership and is higher (CP).

For instance; you take your Taco into dealer A for a problem that is under warranty. The labor rate might be $50 an hour.

Then you take your Taco to the SAME dealer with the SAME problem, but past the warranty period, and the labor rate is $75 an hour.

****Who here knows what labor rate is higher? Who here would rather make $50 an hour verses $75 an hour?***

    End of story.

So then why do the techs give such a hard time? Why not take that 0.4 hours, flash the damn truck in 5 minutes, call it a day?

They have to test drive before, and after. They get paid for 20mins when it'll actually probably take them an hour in total.

So, what would happen if they just applied the flash even though the symptoms were not present or checked for? I'm thinking it wouldn't hurt anything. Truck comes in for service, service manager notes these TSBs haven't been applied and just orders them done as a matter of course, even though customer is not complaining about any of the problems the flash is supposed to fix. In the end it's probably less time for the tech, and future complaints are alleviated.

For what it's worth, the customer should still be asked if they want the updated version flashed. I know I dont want my truck updated without my knowledge. Especially since I'm tuned, so that version would be overwritten once i got home anyway, so why would I want it messed with?

If this is the case, customer's word would be my verification and pulling into the mechanics bay would be my test drive.

Funny...I had a similar experience at my dealer. He was captured on my dash cam as he test drove my '98 SR5 trade-in. Not as sinister as your recording. Mine is just funny and I am very happy with my dealer and my purchase.

Here in CA., you are required by law to post a sign inside your vehicle that states audio is being recorded...or turn off the mic on the dash cam. Yes, it's true, I researched it after someone pointed that fact out. Other states may have similar laws.

PS - I still don't have a sign in my truck and I record audio full time.
