So glad I live in an area where you don’t have to get smog tested. I can do pretty much anything in the PNW!

Full disclosure....I was on 1.03 91 running 93 Octane and I'm currently on 04B40 Toyota tune (running 87 and waiting for 1.05). The tune GREATLY improves the truck and may make it acceptable to you. It does not however completely overcome the %$#@ed up double over-drive transmission gearing. People with 4.88s and the tune seem to be the happiest (thought someone posted in here in the last day with 4.88s that still isn't happy with hwy behavior)...but to me, that seems overkill of highway driving (especially if you are not carrying hundreds of lbs of extra weight). Right now 4.88s are the only available option, though 4.30s (what the manual has) or 4.56 would seem more appropriate to me, and something I would consider once out of warranty. Crossing my fingers that 1.05 will be so good I eat my words, but I don't think the hardware issue (transmission gearing and motor designed for higher rpm hp instead of lower rpm torque) can be completely compensated for with software.

Shorter version, if you are only annoyed by how it drives, the tune could possibly be enough for you...if you HATE the way it drives, you will just hate it less. Me, I hate it less...but so far it's helped enough to prevent me from taking the bath on trading in a nearly new truck on something else. Had it not been for the tune, I would not have made it 6 months. As it is, it's been 14 months and the tune plus still no real better options have kept me in the Tacoma.

I would settle for the v8 in the ISF.

If you have an 8” rear end like the sport, there are many gear ratios available up to 5.29. If you an OR with the 8.75” rear, you only have 4.88 or 4.3 from a manual iirc.

As a guy with the tune (1.04R 91) and 4.88’s with lift, 34s, steel armor, and extra weight I can say that I’m in a happy place. Finally! I got almost 18mpg on the way to a buddy’s place this morning. About 30 miles away on hilly roads with up to 60mph and many lights. Truck pulls hard af but if you drive it like regularly, it performs very very nicely.

Every version of the OVTune has been a major improvement over what Toyota was offering at the time. That being said, I can’t imagine 1.05 would be anything other than the same. Purchase the tune. You won’t be disappointed.

See when I hear stuff like this I think everyone else is BS’ing or my truck has been twacked from the get go.. I’ve been running 4.88’s and the tune on 87 and 91 for the last 4-5 months with 315’s and average 11-12mpg consistently. No armor no bed rack no extra weight. Even when I had 33’s would avg 14/15 hwy. Ran out of options chasing down potentials problems. Next up is getting a new vehicle lol

I get a steady 17mpg in Central VA on the 1.04 91 tune. When I’m in PA in the Poconos it’s a steady 14mpg. All on 35” Ridge Grapplers.
    Too many factors involved.

Is that a "true" mileage, based on known distance traveled and gallons used, or is the vehicle's calculated mileage? If it is from the vehicle, the 4:88 gears may be messing with the math, since the vehicle calculations are based on the stock gears and tire combo

When I was in Poconos, for the Gander Outdoors 400 race, I was getting 20 MPG on stock gears/tires running 91-93, (depending on what was available when I filled up), octane fuel with the 87 tune
