Using D with gearlock engaged (ECT on) as currently configured in 2.0 beta is not a good idea in a city traffic situation. Because, if you need a downshift from an OD gear you won’t get by stepping on it. It’s locked in the highest gear it’s attained. If you’re driving in D with gearlock engaged, you have to be aware of what’s going on and be ready to move the selector to S for downshift control or punch ECT off to disengage gearlock.

The 2.0 beta is using the same gearlock scheme as 1.05. But my understanding (@OVTune ) is that 2.0 final will be changed to S mode only gearlock with or without ECT when 2.0 final is released.

It’s amazing people still don’t grasp the concept of gear lock. The whole point is the truck doesn’t shift automatically. That means YOU have to shift it.

I think it's also the difference in instructions. In his video, it clearly shows/says move to S and then ECT and you have GL enabled, but above it looks like it is only tied to ECT, regardless if you are in D or S.

But agreed, if it's not shifting by itself, clearly GL is enabled.

It will auto upshift to the selected gear just fine with gearlock. It won’t downshift to the correct gear unless you do it.

Sorry, I had not used Gearlock before and there were a few different explanations for how Gearlock would operate in the 2.0 version. It makes sense now and I will avoid Drive and ECT. I was just asking if that was normal. Gearlock works great in S Mode with ECT.

I don't think that's the issue. I think it's the fact that ETC affects downshifting while in D mode that is confusing some people.

In other words, I think people who didn't understand the GL system are/were expecting it to only affect S-mode while maintaining normal ETC behavior in D mode. In fact, that's the exact reason I refuse to run GL tunes. Constantly having to turn ETC on and off would drive me batshit insane! lol

I personally hope that a non-GL version of 2.0 becomes available for testing soon. My 04B30 is growing jealous again... :D

According to @OVTune, gearlock is engaged with ECT on in S or D. That’s the way it works with 1.05 GL. The 2.0 beta is configured the same way in my understanding.

That's not the way I understood it. Why would he enable in D? Gearlock is all about selecting a gear which is not available in D...?

This is how the Gear Lock tunes function (both 1.05 and current 04B04 2.0 beta):

    - GL activated with the ECT button does not function as a manual shifter in D-mode, but it DOES affect shifting behavior (prevents normal downshifting)
    - GL activated with the ECT button works as a manual shifter in S-mode, and only in S-mode.
    - If you leave ECT turned on, the behavior above is what you can expect in each mode.
    - To avoid any screwed up shifting behavior in D-mode, you must turn ECT off each and every time you switch back into D-mode.

The tunes are a work in progress and turning on gearlock with ECT was a first step. @OVTune Mat will be changing the way gearlock activates in 2.0 final. It will be gearlock in S mode only and not dependant on ECT.

I thought the whole point was to use gearlock while in S mode. Why would you ever want gearlock on while in D?

I think it was just a limitation of how he over-rode the ECT button.

You don’t want it but it was a by-product of the first stab at a user requested gearlock option (1.05 GL).

    Stay tuned for 2.0 final.

It’s been like that since he released the first gear lock tunes. ECT enables the down shift limiting function and then S mode enables the user to select a gear which limits up shift.

So in a nut shell, if you place the truck in ECT mode / D mode, it will allow the truck to upshift as it normally would, although prevent it from down shifting.

This. It is a limitation of the software design. In the final 2.0 release, you’ll simply move over to S mode and gear lock is automatically engaged when running a gear lock enabled tune.
