. I guess that I am one of the "LUCKY" ones. 2017 4X4 off road, 1 calculated misfire in the two and a half years the I have owned this truck, bought NEW. Fusion OBD ll. Hot ass desert driving, mountain driving to 11000 feet, snow you guess it I have probably been there.

 

Me too. Went to the MAZDA OVTune and there are instructions there for the MAZDA! But, MAZDA?

No petition or anything out of the ordinary required. Simply put your truck requires a custom tune for your case. We can do it now, or after final version of 2.0 is ready and custom tune that version.

 

Could someone please direct me to the correct thread. I too have similar issues with my 2018 tacoma and would like to use the ovtune product. Numerous places on different threads (this one is over 2583 pages) have an enormous amount of information. I need to know what 04b04 is and how that applies to the dealer telling me they accomplished tsb 0058-18. What else do I have to know or accomplish before I order the OVtune 1.05?

My guess is most people don't use any software to monitor their tuned trucks, so, sure, the number of users who report misfires will be low. Just saying... this doesn't mean that those misfires are all bad, I sure don't know anything about this stuff and I keep it shut, read and learn.

 

Screw misfires. Gimi turbos.

You're right most people do not. Now take this same consideration when you think how many thousands upon thousands of tacomas drive every day on stock tune and are miss firing "within the boundary of normal counts."
I don't know how many tacomas are sold annually but we do know that *at least some* misfire with stock tune. Take into account that I've tuned less than 0.01% of all tacomas out there, the probably of trucks driving every day with no tune whatsoever and having misfires counts is very very high.

In a perfect world an engine will never misfire (or have a misfire count. Because a "count" does not mean your cylinder literally "didn't fire"). But that is not going to happen. Even mazdas Skyactiv G platform has misfire counts every single day, because of the high compression, direct injection, and octane limitation.
Toyota built and tuned this engine originally and they have designated what is outside the boundary of normal. While some of that *is* questionable, some misfire counts on cold engine driving that is still well within toyotas boundary of normal does not concern me. When the engine is cold the combustion is going to have the least amount of precision. Remember that at low rpm and low load the engine is still using the PORT injectors with this compression, which is much less precise than the direct injectors. Now that's cold engine + port injection + high compression + tuning for more performance.

 

Thx spiIke 911321...I reread those instructions..contained therein is the reference to purge all data 04b04.. I am still confused as to what 04b04 is..do I have it already on the truck? is this something that comes with 1.05? so sorry for my ignorance..Thx for your assistance..

I agree that there is obviously a number of misfires that is considered acceptable, within limits by Toyota. From what I read here lately, that number is quite high, so I stopped being worried if the misfire increase from, say 5 to 10 during a trip.

 

No do not be sorry, good questions. You have a 2018? You do NOT have 04B04, Buy the tune and get the cables and hook up to your OBD II and identify your ECU and there you go. Start from there. You have to be quick as OVTune is going dormant for a while (maybe until 2020?). I believe that you have 04A61 ECU.

 

04B04 is one of the various calibrations that Toyota has installed on our trucks. Yours being an ‘18 likely already has it. Do you have a flash kit yet or access to Techstream?

The above post beat me to it. Although I thought B04 was the calibration you would have had. In any case, Mats kit, Techstream or an OBD11 scanner will tell you what you have. Step 1 is buy the kit. Figure out your existing calibration later.

 

2018 here.... came with 04A60. Used TS to upgrade to 04A61.

 

I'll worry about misfires when the damn check engine light comes on. Until then I let it eat. If u hook up TS and sitting with the truck at idle,turn the steering wheel and it will show a misfire. But it don't. False positive.

 

Okay. Good to know. He is most likely 04B60 and needs to update to 61? Thanks.
