Why do you need power to crawl through traffic? :p

How else are you supposed to cut people off? Gotta have that low end power to fly into that other lane

I wasn't really thinking about power, that 10mpg is what makes me worry. Usually with power at the low end fuel economy improves at low speed as well, as long as you are easy on that pedal. I'm sure Toyota wasn't thinking of fuel economy for that range.

With the stock tune this would actually be true as if you tried to switch a lane your truck would just cut fuel and you would look like an idiot.

As a matter of fact, unless I am mistaken Mat has mentioned the truck is tuned very low in the rpm range (around idle?) to conserve fuel - albeit slightly. It is now being revamped for the sake of drivability. Someone else who follows this thread more closely: please feel free to contradict me if I'm wrong.

I've said it many times before - there is no such thing as free energy. Sure, a leaned out, well written tune can provide more power as well as efficiency - but not at the same time. No matter how you slice it, if you put your foot down to ask for more power you gotta pay for it.

I'm also not putting a whole bunch of stock in our motors pulling noticeable power gains through the bottom of the powerband. I think Mat's rewrite of this rpm band will be cleaned up and may produce smoother power, but if the truck makes 35whp from stock on 93, I wouldn't expect 5whp at the bottom of the spectrum as well.

As far as the mileage is concerned in stop and go traffic, you're still starting up 4500lbs from a dead stop, and then going right back to 0, over and over. The only thing that's gonna help you there would be a shit ton of li-ion batteries - and who wants that??? :)

Maybe off-topic, but- Fox has an article on Toyota recalling some 2018-2019 Tacomas:

"The other recall affects about 47,000 Tacoma pickups from 2018 and 2019. A brake master cylinder seal can become damaged and leak brake fluid, reducing front brake performance and increasing stopping distances. Dealers will replace the master cylinder. Owners will be notified in late January."

Please, please, Toyota; 1.05 is so-o-o close! Don't use this as an excuse for another TSB dump!

    There. Back on topic.

From writing back and forth with Mat, he said that the truck can be tuned to be more efficient for city and highway. That is what I am looking for. With a fully equipped rig I will try and squeeze every mpg out of it that I can. If I can get stable 20mpg on the highway then I will be very happy. With the custom tuning that is coming with 1.05 and 4.88 gears it may be possible.

If it can stay in 6th gear at 60-80 up hills with the auto, there’s gotta be WAY more on the low end.

I can surely test it for you. I am on 1.04R and get the stumbling in 5th. My wife keeps asking if the truck is dying... :(

The stumbling issue is not related to the transmission it's from VVT it's fixable

That's good to know. So if 1.05 don't cure it, u should be able to cure it after some data logging.

I hope so, that is my biggest gripe with the Tacoma, when coasting between 15-25mph(sometimes at other speeds), and then flooring the accelerator, I just get either a ton of revs and no go, or no go and then a jolt into gear and way to high of revs like it finally figured out what I wanted to do.

@OVTune , any chance of setting S mode to default to whatever gear you're in when you switch over?
I can't stand that it drops to 4th every time I switch over on the highway, or having to kick it down three times to get 1st in off-road situations...

Have not found any clear way in the ecu *yet* for this. Likely I can change the default gear but can't make the default gear variable.

Also people with test files please provide me any feedback on highway testing. Thanks!
