Running A on 87 oct. 265/70/17 Falkens and before tune averaged 16MPG per tank. With tune 18.5-20MPG per tank. More power and love it. Id say 50/50 highway/city driving as most of my commute happens during traffic hours anyways. On those long commutes from San Diego to Orange County, no traffic, I averaged 22mpg.

Anyone prefer the 87 tune over the 91?

    Mostly stuff I built.
Go tow a trailer of any shape or size if you really want to see some bad MPG. I have noticed it really does not matter which of my trailers I pull mileage is the same. 4800 lbs of car hauler and rock crawler, empty 900lb 5'x10' utility trailer or my 3000? Lbs welding trailer I get 11-12 MPG.

One thing I did noticed by accident and this may have been a fluke. I accidentally left my trailer lights unhooked for a 80 mile round trip to pickup material at the steel yard and that trip I got 14-15 MPG both ways. Made same trip a second time that same day with the lights plugged in and the fuel mileage was back to 11-12. Makes me wonder if the CANBUS doesn't pick up on the trailer being plugged in and do something with the engine performance. The trucks do come equipped with electronic trailer sway control (TSC) which is linked into ABS and traction control so I could see Toyota doing something like that. @OVTune

    245 16 tires stock I was 19.5 mpg over 35000 miles

    102a 91 tune after 2000 miles I’m at 17.4 to 17.2

Highway 80 to 90 mph for 1 hour then heavy City traffic for an hour. 230 miles a day.

Driving the 2 fwy north out of downtown LA stock the truck would upshift/downshift 14 Times or more on the uphill climb trying to maintain 80, with OV it does one shift cycle now on a downhill. Huge improvement, able to maintain 80 without truck speeding up then shifting loosing mph then downshifting.

Thanks OV the truck drives much better can’t wait for the mpg increase.

I still have a harsh downshift after deceleration in the 20 to 40 Mph range when I step on the gas to accelerate. It’s like the truck shifts but the cams are not advanced and the truck doesn’t through fuel at the same time. This was way worse with the stock tune.

I dolly towed a corolla back from Colorado (800 miles) with my 17 MT and averaged about 17 mpg (no tune). This was all interstate though around 65 mph so I’m sure that helped. I was expecting much worse though.

Pulling my cargo trailer with the 16 auto I had and averaged about 10 mpg no matter what I did with some trips of 7-9 mpg.

I have a 2016 DCSB automatic with 30000 miles on it. It is mostly stock other that a hidden winch in the front and a softopper on the back. After running 1.02A 87 for about 4000 miles I have been averaging 15 to 16 mpg. I drive 75% highway. When towing my 22 ft travel trailer which weights 5000lbs fully loaded I get 9-10 mpg. I am amazed when I see people with bigger heavier tires getting better mpg’s!

Are you really comparing bigger, heavier tires to pulling a 5k travel trailer? Tune aside, what do you think is an acceptable mpg for a truck with a 3.5 towing a travel trailer?

No I am just telling what my experience has been with the 1.02a 87 tune with a pretty stock taco and that I am surprised that others with bigger heavier tires are having better mpg’s than me. I threw in the travel trailer piece because some others were posting their experiences with towing mpg. I am not surprised at the mpg’s I get when towing my TT however.

I look forward to the better highway driving experience. There are two large and long hills on the highway near my house and it is brutal coming up them. I've never been the guy who is always going into passing gear until I got this truck. Usually on the highway I could just build up a little more speed but this truck is like a tractor trailer, build up all that speed and just watch it bleed out as you are going up the hill, then 4th gear and 6th rinse and repeat.

I could've wrote this post verbatim. I absolutely love the aesthetics of this truck. Gorgeous! But the tradeoff in drivability is getting close to unbearable. At 3K miles I was hoping to shed the "learning" mode of the tranny. Nope. Still a sloth that hunts constantly.
I read about about TSB's. OV Software revisions. Shift Sense and ECT always on mods. To me everything just feels so........BETA. Toyota sent a prototype product out for final tweaks before introduction to the masses. I really hope something breaks here. Not physically, but more like an AHA! moment for Toyota or a developer to unmask a solution to what potentially may be my favorite vehicle yet. And this is not at all a knock for the OV team. Its refreshing that such a programmer has taken on the task to better the platform. I know there will be revisions to a relatively new engine, but I'm gonna hold out until there is a bit more stability integrated into the tune before I invest in the product.

Your choice but 1.02 is already worth the investment and it will only get better.

I look forward to the next update if it is focused to highway driving as that's where I spend most of my time. I refuse to use my cruise control as it won't stop shifting and I live in a relatively flat area.

Looking forward to this! I'm hoping you'll keep those with 80mph speed limits in mind, I can barely get my truck to stay in 5th at 80mph, most of the time it's in 4th at 3500 rpm with stupid bad mpg.

It was pretty much running wide open in 3rd gear to maintain speed - I could basically watch the fuel gauge go down. There was a pretty strong headwind and it kept jumping between 3rd and 4th so I eventually got irritated and just locked it into 3rd.

    I’m in a MT now. I had a 2016 auto (purchased 11/2015) I traded on a 2017 MT in April 2017 after 50,000 miles.
