Sticky rear brake drums? Have seen that issue from time to time on TW.

On my old truck after I would drive on wet roads then park it in sub freezing temps with the e brake engaged, it would freeze so I would have to warm the truck up for about 10 min then give it some gas to break the frozen seal.

I’ve also had my e-brake stick. If there’s no lights on the dash, my vote is to do exactly what the guy above me said.

I doubt that, I get in my truck, start it count to about 10 and drive off. In just over a mile the heat is starting to crank.

Stomp the top of each tire from the side with your foot. Should break it loose if they are stuck. When the brakes stick they won't let the truck move. Had to do this a few times with both Tacoma's. Especially after getting wet or washing it and it sat overnight. Most of the time you will hear the pop when they turn loose kicking them.

I agree with the frozen brakes. Especially if it is humid where you are. Have you tried putting it in 4X4?

Floor it. If one wheel is frozen it's a stuck drum. Happened to me. Broke out a hammer and hit the back side until it unfroze.

In my instance I had driven in some dirt and muddy water. Washed the truck later and let it sit. The much piled up and froze one of the drums.

Easy enough fix if you figure out which is stuck and have a hammer.

Did it even feel like trans engaged when you shifted? You need to at least feel that before I would be thinking brake issue. See if the rpm drops any when you shift from park to drive and rev.

OK guys here is an UPDATE on my truck.Got home from work Sunday night at 11pm. I have auto start for both my cars so I started the Tacoma from the house.Waited about 12 minutes to go out and see if the truck would move and it did I drove it a couple of miles and it's running as normal. So I don't know what caused the truck not moving in drive Saturday morning.

I still think it was the brakes. Have seen that happen before.

Do you mean they may have been stuck frozen because it was 23 degrees ?Oh also I forgot on Friday I ran the truck through the car wash but I don't think that would have anything to do with the truck not moving the morning after

Moisture in them. Next time try the stomping the top of the tire from the side. You'll go immediately then. Usually always the rear end holding it like we said earlier.

Thats why I mentioned if it was humid outside. When you parked the truck some moisture might have gotten into the brakes then froze. I have had my brakes grab for a bit and kind of make a thud sound when I drove away. The sound was the brakes unsticking.

    That was probably the reason.

That's what the guys are saying. You washed the truck the day before, parked it at home with moisture still in the brakes and the cold weather that night cause that moisture to freeze and the brakes to stick. They probably unfroze not long after you tried starting it on Saturday morning if the weather warmed up a bit. Not uncommon in cold climates.

As a general rule which I'm sure most of you folks do, I never apply my safety brake when on the level at a ski resort or anywhere it's going to dip below freezing. I'd rather block my wheels for safety sake than deal with frozen drums. Glad to hear OP that your problem is resolved. :kona:

I guess frozen brakes is more noticeable in an auto. I’ve always used my parking brake in the winter as a habit from when I parked in a steep driveway but I’ve never had an issue just giving it some gas to break free (manual).

Drum brakes have a lot of surface area. Moisture (even a small amount) between the shoes and drum will really make them stick like glue until warmed or popped loose.

As medic2230 mentioned several times above, just give your rear tires a good kick along the top edge to make the rim torque the drum a tad.
Since the shoes are basically vertical in relation to the drum, you will get all the leverage you need to break the leading edge of each shoe free at their top edge when the drum is shocked.

Washed mine without driving it around and the brakes were froze the next day. Would not even budge in reverse or drive. I couldn't even feel it move a mm. Sounded rather sick when it broke loose but all is fine now.
