This is a variant of the LGX engine currently used in most Cadillac products and the Camaro. Horsepower is up to a whopping 308 and it has cylinder deactivation. The new transmission has a shorter 1st and a taller final drive, for better torque off the line yet improved highway fuel economy.

GM isn't screwing around with the midsize segment anymore. Hopefully this serves as a wake up call for Toyota.

If the interior fit and finish is still sloppy, plastic pieces still don't fit right, the welds are still crappy, and the seals are still leaky...what's the point of changing engine and tranny? Sounds like they're trying to compete with the Dodge, not the Tacoma.

CAFE. This should add up to a ~10% fuel economy improvement.

When they fix the build quality then I see Toyota actually having competition. I've tested 3 - all had issues. A guy at work here has one...and he wishes he'd gotten a Tacoma instead.

I really don't think Toyota is worried.

I had also read an article earlier this week that they were planning an actual Off Road Version too, not just some Stickers on the side.

I don't care if that thing gets 500 mpgs, I just couldn't see myself financing a GM product.

cylinder deactivation sucks, I don't know anyone that likes it or the troubles it causes.

The automotive press hasn't caught onto any systemic quality issues with the twins, but every review of the Tacoma mentions awful road manners, NVH, and/or sluggish powertrain.

The twins went from zero to ~60% of Taco sales almost overnight, and the new diesel might as well be a Ford GT in terms of demand outstripping supply. The Toyota dealer in my city is across the street from the Chevy dealer; the Tacos are stacking up, but the diesel Colorados are sold before they get off the hauler.

DOD is causing problems on their older 5.3s with it. (07+) I saw a diesel Colorado last weekend. i would seriously consider one of those.

Interior quality seems hit/miss, ive seen some shitty ones and some nice normal ones. Would buy.

Maybe they're competing by not competing.

Full size power (of yesteryear, maybe) in a midsize platform, when GM already owns an enormous chunk of the work truck niche and has for decades, that's a combo Toyota doesn't compete with. Only fleet sales I see for Toyota are low power options like Corolla's or the smallest of Tacoma configurations. For actual work use, and it may just be in my rural area, GM holds the market by the balls.

I'm sure the new 8 speed auto will have zero issues.

Sounds like a great motor/trans combo, I would definitely check it out if I were looking.

    Any progress is good news.

I have a truck that I'm happy with, and don't need anything else. The more progress there is right now, the more competition there will be, the better the products will be in 5/10/15 years (when I'll actually consider getting a new ride).

As much as you guys want to hate on GM (and I'm largely with you there), I'm happy to see they're not sitting still. This will benefit everyone in the long-term.

This guy gets it. The Gen 3 Taco was a Gen 2 with a nicer interior, new gadgets, and the latest minivan/crossover engine precisely because no one challenged the Taco's midsize crown in the past decade. If the twins/Ranger/Jeep pickup/new Frontier are competitive, the Gen 4 Taco will be a much bigger step forward.

It would be easy to bash the GM twins on quality but the gen Tacoma 3 rollout has been horrendous. GM is already taking a huge bite out of the mid-size market share. Why do people get all defensive over another company offering more options? This is what drives the industry to produce better products across the board.

Id lease it, wouldnt buy it. But that goes for almost any car/truck nowadays for me. Too much tech crap to break or not work right from the start.
