    thanks
yes, have the pdf downloaded. good info. Seems like MTS (brake simulated locked diffs) and rear locked diff, is a good thing in terrain that would be locked diffs type of stuff eh?

You didn't read my reply, above?
Manual has the original A-TRAC. Automatics have MTS which is adjustable A-TRAC based on the ground surface you are on. A-TRAC is a traction control far above limited slip... more closely works like front and rear lockers. Using A-TRAC (or MTS) will generally get you anywhere you would want to go and prevent you from getting stuck. However, the good old locker is there FOR EMERGENCY USE ONLY. Don't you guys have the sticker on your door or the owner's manual or the card in the sun visor?

Now I see your previous post. Ok, so MTS and ATrac are similar. Good to know. I am a newbie to rear diff lock MTS, Crawl etc. I had Silverados previously. One manual transf case and one auto/switch operated. Mainly just used momentum with those trucks.

I see you mention 4H for sand. That makes sense. Our main obstacle is snow here. Lots of it. Normally Momentum is your friend. The usual stuck hazard is a plow burm that blends in or a snow drift that you do not see. Most times this means getting out the shovel, treads type things, sand/kitty litter.....
What is the best likely setting for deep snow, or once stuck in snow (not totally screwed and hung up) the best to likely get some traction?
I know on my former honda snowblower tractor, using rear diff lock helped.
    Thanks David

The onboard puter probably logs the mph when rear diff locked. Sent to the Yota servers. They wouldn't let me buy the truck without signing a privacy statement. Paid cashola

That's Toyota's lawyers at work. A locked diff make steering difficult/ dangerous. Locked is fine if you don't need to turn the wheels and don't go fast. A-TRAC does not affect steering.

Seriously, if you have A-TRAC/ MTS, you may never need the locker. That some of you didn't even know you have MTS/ A-TRAC (all Off Road TRD 4x4s since 2009) is really a sad statement for both the salesstaff at the delership and you guys researching such an expensive machine.

Now, relax... use the locker, but do use the A-TRAC first (and always when in L4).

My friend has atrac in his new 4runner. While it is nice, it hurts him at times. In muddy scenarios where wheel speed and momentum is needed, it kills both those things. Atrac isn’t a magical end all be all, and will never replace a true locker.

I cannot be considered a great source for deep snow driving (I live in San Diego County, under 1,000 ft.)
But, I did take my truck up to Pine Valley with another TW member to test it out. I found L4, A-TRAC PLUS the rear locker on, to work best. The reason was, with the rear locked, A-TRAC is disabled until you drop below 3 mph. That way, there is no engine regulation unless you have been halted by the terrain... Kept us plowing through the deep snow field (well deep for Southern California). A-TRAC alone is really a crawling system and not for running about. H4 seemed to struggle in the deep snow.

Hi Bryan! I will be happier once a 3rd gen owner can take me for a test drive so I can experience the Crawl/MTS/Trac On/Trac Off changes! I just moved so, once I am settled at the new place I will have some freedom.

Very interesting!!!! I got stuck in a ditch/snow drift while trying to get into a lake to ice fish in March. Dug out under to free up frame. Tried Crawl. Moved a bit. Then let sun melt some frozen gravel and filled my planned travel route tracks with it. Did 4L in MTS (cant remember which setting) and I popped put and blasted thru a mo fo of a drift for 60 yards. Turned around and back thru. Was impressed with it revving high in 4L in MTS for a light truck.
Now, since the door sticker says Locker under 5mph only, if I used that going 10-25mph blasting through snow, is it going to get messed up? Just a guess, Im not gonna quote you.
I woulda engaged it regardless vs walking MILES or borrowing a camps woodstove for the night.

Side note, got the hi lift mate for hi lift jack. works well on the wheel of ORoad it seems.
One day would like frame mounted sliders....
Gotta watch front caliper. Haven't tried rear disc clearance yet.

I cant reply but only from experience here.

When in snow and mud A-trace worked ok. Not great but efficient enough.
I was not stuck so I have no insight to as far as being stuck. I could hear it doing its thing so I would not lose momentum.

I feel for snow moment in 4w whatever you feel is good at the time is where it is at.
I did the abs kill switch mod because like many other in the snow have used the brakes and the abs kicks in and you cant do shit.
Not going fast just the breaks are wet and the abs kicks in.

Now as for the locker it has gotten me up some crazy shit and thru stuff that just A-track and 4x4 has failed. Locked rear end has its benefits so I did the locker anytime mod.

Also it super easy to burn out with the locked rear end.
I hope this helps,l welcome to T. World and good luck!
