Hi Mahana, what did the dealership do to rectify the clear coat issue? My blue truck is 17 months old and looks just like yours.

    Thanks, .Keith

Just a bunch of old crap
Didn't read the whole thread, but are you using windshield washer fluid with ammonia or other chemicals? Those streaks sure look like clearcoat erosion from certain washer fluids. Never use any washer fluid with ammonia!!

For the TLDR crowd. OPs paint was determined a defect and fixed. Since then many similar issues have popped up for other owners. Hopefully Toyota fixes it for them even outside warranty.

My brother in law has a 07ish Civic, which had clearcoat failure on the hood, roof and trunk. He was out of regular warranty but got it repainted for free a couple years ago. If he had brought it in like a week later they wouldn't have done it, some kind of paint warranty for either 9 or 10 that he just squeaked in under.

I am currently talking to the dealership I bought it from in Salinas, CA about getting mine repaired. I first noticed it March and has continued spreading rapidly and getting darker (whiter). Here is a picture I took of my truck mid June and the damage looks very similar to yours. Will update you all if the problem is solved with the dealership.

Which plant did these trucks come from? Texas or Baja?

When I first noticed the damage, I took it to a dealership to get it checked out. They tried to blame me for damage, saying I must have sprayed something on the top of the cabin. So I let it develop some more and took it to the original dealership I purchased the truck at. This is what they first saw in March.

I'd pay a premium for a Japan built Tacoma.

Even though my wife's Japan built Rav4 is a lower grade vehicle in my opinion, the fit and finish is higher quality than my Tacoma.

I think they are. It's little things. Her interior door handle and mine appear to be the exact same. When I grab hers, it has a solid feel. Mine feels like it could break. All 4 doors on both vehicles have the same feel. The hood on the rav4 is solid. Mine flops in the wind and pops when you're washing it. The panel the license plate goes into on my truck isn't snug, every one of her panels fits like a glove. Nothing major, but it's very noticeable.

A lot of posts on here lately. The Nice thing about the repaint is that the clear coat was laid down nice and thick by a human and not this thin robot paint.

Cool, as they should. They're doing the same for me. I'll know more tomorrow when I drop it off at the Marin dealership.

my old car is a Toyota - a scion xb, and the paint is great other than normal dents and dings for a old ride.
Yes, the T4R is Japan built, the fit and finish is higher quality. Even my Scion is Japan built too, and the fit and finish of it is better than the Tacoma was. The seats in the scion are the most comfy, plush seats ever. If this car ever dies, I'm saving the seats for sure.

I agree there! Most new stuff is all the electronic stuff that will be an expensive nightmare to fix later, for example, TSS; that ought to be a fun expensive system to replace one day. I love the old hilux, pickup and 1st gens, they do all you need in a truck, basic, and well made. Sure the old stuff is not as comfy or technologically up to date, but is it really NEEDED to connect a smartphone to listen to music or blab on the phone? nope. I can remember the days of before the cell phone (gasp!), we all survived just fine. LOL

i barely drive my truck. has 12k on it in 2 years. im just amazed at how thin the paint seems. little chips all over right down to the metal. scratches so easy.

im almost scared to use a pressure washer on it. i leased it, and was considering buying at lease end because they hold their value and in theory it should last me a long time, but im having second thoughts.

Since posting last night I did a google search for thin paint on new cars. Came across a Reddit post and everyone was complaining across all brands. Even luxury brands like Lexus and Infiniti. Good to know that it's pretty much across the board, at least we're not the only ones.

In my experience though my Volkswagens always had good paint. My most recent was a 2011 and was dark metallic gray. Had only a couple scratches in over 45k and lots of highway driving, shitty 2 and 3 lane long island highways with construction vehicles.

My previous car was a Scion and the paint on that was thin too. One time I was pressure washing the bugs off the hood after a long trip and the paint started to peal at one of the tiny chips, this wouldn’t have happened on my ‘79 Jimmy.
