as in I could pick her out of a crowd, but yes. slack jawed, dead eyes, all of it.

I wasn't doing anything wrong in that story apart from speeding a bit (speed limit is 75, no telling how accurate my speedo was but I doubt I was doing more than 80)

The brakes on my OR were great! They were very grabby and bit hard when applied. I had to get used to using little brake pressure to get a smooth stop. I liked how responsive they were, no problems getting stopped in a hurry!

I have zero complaints about my Taco especially the brakes. Drive your truck for a couple thousand miles then see how you like it (and stop reading this forum!)

Correct, my VSS light was on becasue of the lift and re-alignment. I didn't have Stability Control, Traction Control, and I found out I also didn't have ABS when I locked them up and almost rear ended the car in front of me.

Adding some stainless lines, better pads, and slotted rotors you'll sort out the truck.

    Three points:

    1. The stock Taco brakes are powerful enough i.e. they are able to lock up the tires and trip ABS. So ultimate braking performance is limited by tire grip.

    2. Initial bite is more a function of pad compound. Toyota probably chose a compound that wears better and creates less dust than BMW. You can always change to a more aggressive pad from Hawk, EBC, etc.

    3. Pedal feel on the TRD Off Road is poor because of the electric pressure pump. Not a performance problem unless you need to modulate for track use.

Bummer deal there, bad way to find out no ABS, when you're standing on the brakes.

First Manual trans to use less brakes, 2nd my wife would disagree with the brakes being shit, as I just tapped them the other day and lets just say she acted as I was doing a buck and slammed on them.

A very few of the commentators should really read and fully comprehend my original post before typing. Some are repeating what I have already stated in the original post. LOL. I thank the rest of you for your knowledgeable comments.

Does anyone else think that it takes a long time to brake in their 3rd gen Tacoma? NO
    I'm also coming from a 3,000lb 2006 BMW 325i. Big difference.
I understand I'm going from 4 disc to 2 disc/2 drum and added 1k lbs Thats important in this situation.
    but damn
these brakes either suck I don't agree, they grab and hold.
    or
Germans have their shit wired tight! I also don't agree, VWs where know at one time for shitty electronics and bad auto transmissions.

I tried to show you that I read the whole post and attempted to show my reading comprehension, but that can sometimes be difficult for me at times.

My wife has had two Mini cooper S, which I drove all the time. The Tacoma brakes just fine. The negativity on this forum needs to end.

My 2017 OR has pretty decent brakes, in my vehicular experience. Can't compare with what others have felt on their trucks. I would like the brakes to be a bit better, sure, but they are more than acceptable as they are, to me.

    Compared to my previous vehicles:

2014 VW Passat - about equal to my Taco
2001 Dodge Ram 2500 - definitely not as good as my Taco
1987 Ford F250 - definitely not as good as my Taco
1980 Toyota Hilux - been so long, I can't say for certain, but pretty sure my 2017 Taco is a good bit better
1976 Volvo 164e - been so long, I can't say for certain, but pretty sure my 2017 Taco is a good bit better

Last post and then I'm popping smoke.

The bottom line is the brakes could be much better. Some would even argue that the rear drum brakes MIGHT of been a cost cutting move from Toyota and not a rear brake longevity issue. My 13 year old GMC Sierra 1500 SWB has 4 wheel disc brakes that are amazing.

And if you don't understand the first line of this post...no worries.

That's a good thing in my opinion, ABS sucks. ABS has not made vehicles any safer according to insurance company statistics.

I have no complaints about the braking power of my Tacoma other than the ABS in the snow. Using brakes too much wastes gas :).

Yeah I just replaced my brakes on my tundra with green stuff pads , an improvement non the less , and even with 4 corner disc brakes my 3rd gen tacoma brakes way better. You gotta start slowing down from waaayyy back to get that full sized stopped. So I know what you mean by "cost of business " by owning a Toyota.

^This. I opened the thread thinking this was actually going to be the subject of conversation - that the brakes are so sensitive and grabby. Everyone I have let drive my truck has commented on how incredibly sensitive the brake pedal is (after almost sending us both through the windshield at the first stop we come to). I jump in my wife's Sienna once a month or so to run the kids somewhere and I have almost run into the back of people when coming to a stop because you have to push the brake pedal in SO much further before you begin to feel the vehicle slowing.

All these post on the Tacoma's brakes kill me. Was I bothered at first that a vehicle I paid over $35k for still had rear drums; yes I was, but that ended as soon as I had my first panic stop. They are good enough to lock the tires, so like what has already been said, it comes down to the tires being the limiting factor, not the brakes.
