2017 Tacoma TRD Off Road or 2014 4Runner SR5 Premium...

A debate as old as time...Looking at either a 2017 Tacoma TRD Off Road with 110,000 KM or 2014 4Runner SR5 Premium with 260,000 KM. I have a 2011 4Runner and love it, but life has changed and I find myself wishing I had a truck to haul stuff more and more, while also looking at the fact that the '11 is about to crack the 300,000 mark and resale value will go down. There are a lot of things I like about the 4Runner (dry and covered cargo area, more space, and from what I can tell a bit more of a polished interior and ride). With that being said, I've always been drawn to Tacoma's and have found a pretty good deal on a 2014 4Runner and 2017 Tacoma Off Road, with about a $9,000 CAD difference in price.

Knowing myself, I typically tend to keep vehicles for 3-5 years and then switch/upgrade, so looking at this as both a daily driver experience as well as a resale value play.

Would love to hear others experience and if anyone has any insights into the '17 Off Roads.

    Thanks!

I mean if you need a truck, it’s a no brainer.
    Both are good

Not much point trading one 4runner for another higher mileage 4runner. Buy the truck and keep your 2011. use both for a few months. Decide which one to keep at that point and sell the other.

I've had several 4runners, a 2018 Tacoma, Land Cruiser, GX. Something about an SUV keeps me coming back. I miss my Tacoma at times, but not when I'm driving in my 100 series Land Cruiser. Better quality and having more interior space is so nice.

2010+ 4runner are so well built, I wouldn't trade for a Tacoma unless I really needed a pickup.

@Sharpish, that's potentially the plan. Buy and then test them both out too see which is a better fit for our lives.

@Superdave1.0, that's some solid experience insight and I can't agree more about the interior space; I'm just finding we're doing a lot more "dirty" work that a cargo box would be better suited for: dump runs, hay runs, lumber, etc. For context, we moved to some property and have a bit of a hobby farm so the 4R interior was starting to take a bit of a beating with everything going on.

Aside from the creator comforts, I'm really trying to figure out what is going to be the better option resale wise based on the age and KM's. The Tacoma is listed at roughly $5,000 below market price in my area, and the 4Runner is about $2,000 below. I know vehicles are a depreciating asset but this is just the way my mind works haha.

    Welcome to the forum :hattip:

Trucks are great when you need a truck, the rest of the time they can be kind of an inconvenience as a daily.

If your current 4 Runner works well for you most of the time how about adding a quality utility trailer instead?
You can get lot done with a 5 x 12 trailer easier than any pickup.

Try putting 10 sheets of drywall in a 5 foot bed Tacoma - sure you can do it but just like eating pudding with a fork it is a PITA.

A utility trailer is great! Hell, I will use one with my truck. Another great thing with a trailer is; no, you I need my truck, but you can borrow my trailer. That way when something happens to it, they are cheap and easy to repair, or well within most people's budget if they damaged it to the point they should replace it.
