I’d you had oil droplets that large that timing cover must have been leaking from day 1 if driving it. Especially with that few miles prob just didn’t notice it until oil on ground

They’re always a decent amount on the frame and suspension on the passenger side too.

Dam that must have been a massive leak. They prob didn’t put any sealer on it at factory. Like I said I bet if you would have looked first day driving it you would have seen oil

Yeah the tech said it was a ”decent” sized leak. I live in MN and winters are a pain or I know I would have been under it and saw it I’m sure.

Took the truck back in for the 100k service and they confirmed the timing cover leak. Luckily I am covered under the platinum warranty. They'll take it for a week starting May 1st. I'm having them do brakes too since those are still original.

I’m gonna hit 100k any day now. Hope I’m not in the same boat.

Dropped off the truck today. They'll have it all week. In the meantime I have a 2023 Highlander to get used to. They said they'll probably call me around Wednesday when they're starting to put everything back together.

Can't tell if I'm lucky or not. The dealership let me know they found the water pump and head gasket leaking as well. Luckily they're also both covered under the platinum warranty.

Finally got the truck back after 16 days in the shop. So far so good. Sounds like Toyota covered over $4700 worth of items for me, which is less than I would have had to pay and still more than double what I'm paying for the platinum warranty. Hopefully the timing cover leak doesn't return though!

Thanks for keeping us posted. Hopefully no more issues. Seemed too early for the WP & HG tho.

Yeah, I would agree. Surprised they didn't catch it in any of the other services. But then again, I've put 84k miles on in 3 years so that, combined with the fact that it is essentially a first model year truck (2017 built in 2016) probably contributed.

Glad they got you fixed up! I'm at 80k miles with no sign of timing cover or coolant bypass leaks, keeping my fingers crossed

Add me to the list. Mine is leaking right by the PS pump. With 120k on my truck it's not gonna be under any warranty lol. Will probably just live with it. I change my oil every 5k and it's never been low enough that its an issue. Slight smell when it blows back against the exhaust, but whatever.

Originally came here to see if anyone had attempted to fix this their-self. Was gonna see how convoluted a process it is.

I figure it's probably easier than this being that the engine is coming out of a pickup and not a front wheel drive car/suv.

I’ve heard of guys just removing the power steering pump and putting sealer on the outside of the timing cover to stop the leak. One guy on here claimed he did that and in 20k miles the leak never came back. I sprayed my entire right side timing cover with sprayable gasket maker when I bought it brand new. Let it run all down the timing cover seam . I’m hoping that will prevent it from ever leaking. I’d rather go this route then have my engine removed and completely taken apart.
