Don’t think that matters! The 2GR-FKS’s are assembled/built in Alabama not over in Mexico!

The Baja plant gets their engines from the Kentucky plant. Different engine plants for the 2 different Mexican factories

unfortunately my 2017 had the timing cover leak, coolant bypass leak and of course my rack of pinion started leaking all over my garage.

parts and labor for everything put me a little under 6k :annoyed:

Pretty sure I have the same leak

    2017 108,000km

Out of warranty so we'll see. Going to monitor it for now and go from there

I thought when I left Volkswagen I got away from dealing with the timing belt bullshit. And I thought their design of needing to remove the front bumper and rad was a bad design for service but guess not, Toyota you need to pull whole engine. Oh well.

Just told I have the same issue. Dealership wants 4K to fix the leak.

    2016 with 77500 miles.

Wonder if Toyota will do a TSB for the 3rd gens since they issued one before? Right now just going to drive it and monitor the oil level until the wife's Highlander is paid off and then sell it outright.

I'll throw my hat in the ring. 2016 with 106k miles. At my last oil change I was told I have both the timing cover leak and coolant bypass leak. Quoted over $7800 to fix both.

Might potentially be covered under an extended warranty from the dealer (bought used), so we'll see.

I had my 2016 in a few years ago for an oil change. While I had it in, I asked them to look into a nasty water leak I had in the rear of the cab/headliner. I was still within my extended warranty but I was coming up on 100k fast (I do a ton of driving for work).

The water leak - I had a TRD vinyl sticker on my 3rd brake light. OEM 3rd light, just a simple vinyl sticker on the outside. Service guy tells me they can't fix the leak under warranty because I have an aftermarket 3rd brake light. I tell him it's not aftermarket it's just a sticker. He said they still can't cover it because I "modified" it. Unreal. Wanted like $600 to fix the water leak. Had to drive around with a damn water leak every time it rained, messing up my custom leather seats and leaking right on my sub etc but eventually I got it fixed for free when they did the recall. I took it back to the same dealership and was hoping to smirk at that same service guy but he was long gone from that dealership.

Not long after that, and naturally after I had already crossed 100k and finished my extended warranty, I noticed and oil leak on my driveway. Took it to that same dealership and they said it was the timing cover and quoted me $5500 to fix it. You gotta be kidding me.

I seriously love my Tacoma. I loved my 2nd gen taco too. But Idk how many more times that love is going to stand getting utterly shit on by a massive corporation. They cut corners and put zero thought into the repairability, for their own dealerships!!... let alone a home mechanic.

On top of that, this god damn auto trans is complete garbage. I'm terrified to even know what's going on with it but it knocks, it bangs on some downshifts, it hops and shakes. Looking back, I wish I just held out a little longer to find a manual.

Cars and trucks are so damn expensive anymore, and they're pushing 6+ year financing so people can afford them. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect they last without $5500 oil leaks immediately after your warranty expires. To be forced to drive around with a water leak for years until they finally fix their screw up with a recall. And then to go online and see just how many people have this oil leak. It's seriously astounding.

I guess the real shame is that we literally have no options. They're all guilty of the same shit, making shit vehicles that are ridiculously overpriced and full of issues and cut corners and they'll happily charge you thousands to "fix" them.

Update on this. Sounds like both my issues are covered under my extended warranty which goes until 150,000+ miles or until April 2027. Awaiting a call from the dealer now to have an inspector at the truck and confirm the issues need fixed.

I am apparently in a holding pattern currently, waiting on them to call to bring my truck in. I guess some sort of inspector has to check it out before they will commit to doing the warranty work. The dealer that will be doing the work is not wear I bought the truck, but is part of the same chain of dealers, so I'm sure that's part of it. Really hoping my warranty includes a rental car since my truck is my DD.

They need an inspector to look at a timing cover leak to approve it ?

It sounded odd to me as well. The dealer was the one that recommended both repairs. My guess is that their warranty is through a third party and that is why the inspector will be involved. I'm sure they will do anything they can to not pay out.

I my case, I see oily dirt around timing chain tensioner cover (bank 1) and below. It seems the source of the seepage and should be easy to correct by torqueing bolts or removing the cover and appling rtv. May need to remove a few things to get to it.
    The other bank is clean.
I have not seen any oil dripping and the level stays the same between oil chages.
On my other car, the tensioner was a source of oil seepage as well. I added rtv to it when was tearing the engine down.
