on the edges of the tensioner cover or the opening on the timing chain cover . I would do is to seal the cover with rtv, clean the front of the engine and monitor for leaks before spending $$$ for repair.
Toyota sealer is pretty good and take some effort to separate the cover. Plus, those surfaces are well machined and small amount of the sealer will seal it.
also, most of the timing chain cover bolts are hand tightened (15 lb), except for bolts in the junction of the head and the block. If it leaks in that area (area A, B), i would just add rtv and tight bolts.

You’re saying to loosen the bolts and open up the timing cover slightly and put rtv in there or just apply on the outside? Trying to understand you lol. On my 2023 I sprayed liquid gasket maker all down the timing cover. It’s really good product, warranty or not I just don’t want the engine torn apart for an oil leak.

I heard another person did that on here and he drove 20k miles and still no oil leak. So putting sealer on the outside deff works

I'm definitely not planning to pay $$$ to reseal the cover.

The tensioner cover plate has a gasket, which I believe the same metal one Toyota uses on its external tensioners. Im going to take it out and check it out.

Is your timing cover leaking bad?

That has me even more nervous about taking mine in. It would appear the dealership forgot they were supposed to call me about bringing mine in for the "inspector". It's been almost two weeks now since I last talked to them...

I have really lost all faith in this Toyota dealer, but unfortunately they are under the same ownership as the dealer I bought my truck through and who my extended warranty is through.

Are you sure you have a leak? Do you see the oil drippings?
I did clean my timing cover around the timing chain tensioner cover and did inspect the cover all around. I did tigh 4 bolts on the tensioner cover. 2 bolts were a bit loose.
I don't see any evidence of leaks/sipping after cleanup and torqueing bolts.

You really need to check for leaks yourself. I'm afraid a few were taking for a ride by a delaer for a simple tensioner cover "leaking".

2017 Tacoma. 184,000kms. Just got told its the timing case. This is leak number three. I had the first done under warranty, then it went at 142,000kms and it cost $3500 to fix. Dine 46000kms and now gone again. awaiting the dealer to make a decision as they only warranty the work for 2 years or 40,000kms. So im 6000kms over. I'm so annoyed and I'm not paying another $3500. Now they say I need a case! I love my truck but I'm about to pull the pin on it and sell it. Im not dropping $3500 every 2 years.

Update on this, it was covered by my extended warranty and my truck as been in the shop since Tuesday. They are claiming it will be done Monday. It was leaking a bit, but honestly, had the warranty not covered it, I probably would have just let it leak. It wasn't enough to be a concern. I'm just hoping they don't cause any other problems by fixing this one.

Yeah, I don't have high hopes in this dealership and their service after my "next service due" sticker in my windshield showed lower mileage than was currently on my truck...

2016 Tacoma 110k miles, I have it in for a few minor things and just got the dreaded call that they found a leak in the timing cover and it's $5800 to reseal with new orings and gaskets...

I'm going to do what a few others have done and clean it up/ run some permatex along it. Hopefully that will stop the leak.

Question - for those that have sealed it with permatex, did you have to remove anything to be able to get up in there or is it pretty easy to reach?
