So initially I started off with a 2017 TRD OR ACLB. I liked how it looked and to be fair was cheaper than the DCSB. This was my first truck and at the time it was just me and my girlfriend. We really enjoyed the outdoors here on Kauai and I wanted to build a truck that would allow us to experience it anytime we wanted.

The truck looks great! I love Kauai, I spent 12 days out there before I moved back to the mainland from Oahu in 2014.

So I started with an AC first mod was to get rid of the cheese grater. Then waited 4 months to go the SCS Ray 10 lottery. Had some rubbing so went with the bilstein 5100s

Then life hit and me and my now wife found out we are having a baby. A car seat doesn’t go into the Access cab so the rational thing to do was trade up to a DC. Luckily they had one on the lot with a bonus! The bumper caps were already painted. This is something I wanted to do on my AC but never got around to it. I pretty much transferred everything over with the exception of the suspension and went with an Icon stage 4.

My now wife ended up backing my truck up into the father in laws 16 tacoma so I opted to just upgrade to the TRD Pro tails

BLMH in progress. Took about 1 hour to get the glue separated. I wasted the initial and second reheat because I didn’t pry far enough. I took 5 reheats overall. I used 280 degrees for 15mins as the initial heat then 8minutes because I was impatient. In hindsight those two minutes made a huge difference. Just waiting for the paint to cure now.

I’m going pretty slowly as it is the holidays. I was going to reuse the permaseal but changed my mind and ordered some retrorubber so I’m waiting for that to come in. I took maybe 4 hours to do one headlight. The next headlight will probably be much faster. I wasted a lot of time on the first light. It was the first time I’ve ever opened up a headlight so quite a lot of lessons were learned. I’ll post some photos once it’s done. I’m debating recording the next one.

So I’ve been running around with these while the BLHM is in progress. They are slowly growing on me.

The cutoff is actually really clean. There are halogen bulbs right now. I’d say as far as brightness theyre pretty crap. This was coming from headlight revolution LED bulbs though. I did order some LED bulbs for this set of headlights so going to give that a try and see how it goes. They do look really good though. It’ll be hard to choose between the BLHM vs these if the light output once I get the LED bulbs in is similar. I can’t imagine retrofitting these with HIDs. I’m not sure it would survive the heating. The plastic they used in the bucket doesn’t feel very robust tbh. I do wish the LED strip was a little brighter as well.

Finished off my BLHM today. I have to say they look really good and more clean imo compared to the OEMassive style headlights I got off tacomabeast. The big question people had was light output. I’d say that the beam pattern for the oenassives were pretty good for the price. I didn’t take pictures but the cutoff was actually pretty good once they were aimed properly. The downfield throw was pretty crappy though. I’m not sure how much of that is attributed to the bulbs which brings me to my next point. The OEmassives don’t fit the Supernova v3s that I bought. In fact I don’t really think any proper LED bulbs with the right cooling and all the hardware. A solution I thought of is to just drill the cap thread the wire through but I’m fairly concerned about having a heatsink sitting right on the plastic. Not sure why they didn’t just go with the factories and decided an h7 layout with some aweful caps over them was the way to go. Going to stick with the BLHMs for now. I’m contemplating one day redoing this except with a proper HID retro and some demon/angle eyes.

I also installed the VLED front indicator LEDs and I was pretty happy because NO hyperflashing. I had the rears from diode dynamics and they hyperflashed so they had to come out. I bought a resistor from VLED so we’ll have a go with those on the tail lights later.
