2017 TRD OR Power Loss

This happens on my 6 speed manual too. After shifts (mainly into 3rd or 4th) when I step on the accelerator, it hesitates for a half second or so before the power is there. Slightly annoying

 

My 17 had the old CPS

 

Mine pings also when cruising and I accelerate suddenly. I also get the lag in the accelerator when suddenly wanting to accelerate. I end up almost flooring it to get the truck to respond.

 

Well I’ve had mine a month and am use to the strange power curve.... and it gets 20 mpg hand calculated every tank so far.... I’ve heard a little fuel ping but i have ran non ethanol since with no more noise!! I will be getting the tune eventually. It’s funny bc my wife’s highlander has the same engine and that thing runs tottaly different!

 

I’ve had my ‘17 for almost a year now, around 11,500 Miles, and have never had an issue with pinging or loss of power. In fact, when I step on it, it straight takes off pretty damn good for a 6cyl 3.5.

I do always put premium gas in it, have the cat back exhaust, and the upgraded air filter, so that’s probably why......

 

FWIW, and I know you said you’ve tried other fuels, but have you tried premium grade chevron / 76 / whatever name brand gas? I’m not trying to start a new topic on gas brand quality myth busting or that these trucks should or shouldn’t run on whatever 87 octane. Just wondering if you’ve tried what I asked...

 

My dealer initially was a lot like you're describing. I kept switching service writers until I found a good one.

But let's go through your list to see if we can help you.


-Horrible wailing diff howl, which of course they never find
Mine showed up suddenly at 16k miles. Not a peep before that. On deceleration from roughly 60-40 MPH it was pretty loud. I took it in to the dealer shortly after the TSB was announced and my guy ordered the parts without even driving it. I'm having a hard time believing they can't catch this and since there is a TSB for it, no more of the "that's normal" speech is given.

-Some sort of weird noise from the accelerator pedal when giving it a lot of gas going uphill on freeways.
That is a new one to me.

-Terrible pinging in hot weathers
My engine pings like crazy on 87. It rides rough and feels generally like shit. Try a tank or two of 93 and see if it improves. Some users have replaced the CPK with mixed results. I have not because I am lazy.

-Hesitation, stumbling, uneven idle, low power, poor gas mileage
Generally see above.

-Springs creaking when just driving around
Mine do not which is surprising with how I use my truck. But again, there is a TSB for this too. I can't believe the dealer can't catch this.

-Car shakes when letting clutch out in first gear when cold
I have an auto, sorry.

-Noisy clutch pedal (previously addressed)

-Badly scratched instrument cluster which they said all their new trucks also have
Mine is scratch free but I have heard these scratch if you sneeze on them. If it were me and it truly bugged me that much, I'd just replace it myself and have the dealer note to not clean my truck.

-High pitched noise from high pressure fuel pump (previously replaced)
There is a TSB for this as well. I generally think they are just noisy, some more so than others. If you sit at a stop light you can hear many new cars sewing away at idle, not just Toyotas. Hondas are really loud, new pilots are anyways.

Honestly if it were me in your shoes, I'd pick off the low hanging fruit and build from there. There is no point in getting too emotionally invested in a truck you don't like.

 

My 02 pinged for 180k miles...

 

A question I asked earlier that got lost in the fray was about not necessarily octane but ethanol content. Here EVERYTHING "may contain up to" 10% ethanol. In fact you have to pay almost premium price for 87 no ethanol.

I've run the E10 in the truck since new and have zero problems, yet everyone else is "pinging."

Does ethanol play a part in the truck's performance?

 

Interesting... a vote for no ethanol!

 

Most definitely, it does. When I leave California and drive through, say, Idaho, and fill up on premium non ethanol, there is a very noticeable performance improvement.

 

My 17 had hesitation issues, however it wasn't on the CPS recall list. I decided to pull the CPS and have a look, sure enough it was the old one. I put the new one in and 90% of the hesitation went away.

 

Around here ethanol free 87 runs better than 10%corn 93!! I run e free 93 sometimes depending how which pump is empty when I pull into the station.... unless I’m gone out of town I get gas from the same station every week... I’ve bought gas and diesel from the same station for 12 years now! I believe they take care of their tanks and change the filters like they should!

 

See that's funny because I'm putting 87 in with some ethanol in... it's not enough to be certified E10... and have zero issues.

Here it's pretty consistent: reg 87, 90 E10, 91 premium. Some stations sell no ethanol 87 but it's as much as premium.

I have the same issue as tn111. I thought I'd try turning off the vsc but, it occurs with it off too

 

Use 5W-30 oil. That 0W-20 water is too thin to activate Atkinson.

 

I have the hesitation in my '18 as well. Do you notice any difference when the engine and ambient temps are cooler. My throttle response is noticeably worse after the motor heats up and/or ambient temps climb.

Also get an occasional bucking/misfire sensation when I load up the engine at low RPM before it downshifts. Going to make an appt. w/ my dealer soon.

 

Started using Regular Chevron, pinged, tried MidGrade Chevron still pinged, tried Premium Chevron pinging went mostly away.

With temps climing to the 90s here in Oregon, truck is starting to ping even with Premium Chevron.

Didnt know there was a Recall on the CPS, so am actually at dealer right now to see if they'll replace the CPS even if my VIN doesnt come up as an affected unit.

I didnt have the recall for the Rear Diff Leak, but mine was leaking and they covered fix.

So am hoping they replace it without much fuzz, otherwise i'll prob just buy sensor since am here and change it myself.

Engine pinging is MY pet peeve...
