I just installed Trd pro fox shocks from a 2017 Trd pro Tacoma with 30,000 miles on them .I have a 2017 Trd off road install went good but 5 miles into driving a rattling noise happened and I went to look it was the bolt that keeps the top hat down there was a void. I added another picture of the other side that’s normal. I’m worried that the strut is moving as well since there’s nothing to hold the top hat down. Anyone else have this problem or know what’s happening?30E822F3-A2F0-4018-931E-9745264E564F.jpg82566893-FB29-4192-8BD3-E37521EFFD2E.jpgC31B209C-17A1-4BA1-9CBE-BC8216F9E6B4.jpg

There is probably bushing missing on the inside part under the top hat you can’t see.

Do you know if they were disassembled?

That looks like a rough 30k miles. Maybe the shock has been over extended? Is the truck the same height on both sides? Judging by the condition of that nut, somebody has taken it apart

You are 100% missing something inside the coilover assembly. Either a spacer, bushing, etc. Unfortunately need to remove the coilover, take it apart and find out what you are missing.

Pre-2020 Pro coilovers tend to break the last spring coil - a consequence of the coil being closed and ground to a thin taper. I expect it was disassembled at some point for spring replacement.

It's also possible the washer below the rubber bushing simply wallowed out, allowing the shaft shoulder to punch through. Seen it with Dobinsons.

Different shock absorbers between the two. The one seated correctly is the actual Toyota because it has flats at the top.

The one you are having problem with has the wrong shock, fully threaded and looks like has a nyloc nut.

Take a closer look at the top of the shocks, every OEM I've seen(Pro or non-Pro) has wrench flats on the top of the shock shaft.

Random stuff. Oh! and converted to non ADD 4x4.
They are missing the inner rubber cushion. Probably dry rotted and over torqued did the shenanigans

Would that be a shock rebuild and do you recommend shipping them somewhere or finding someone local?

And for the record, from someone who has installed lift kits on over 100 Tacomas...I recommend Eibach springs for TRD PRO lift kit, over the Wescott spacer lift kit.

I would post a "Toyota mechanic help needed" in the Maryland section of this forum. And find someone local to you that knows these trucks. If you were close to me, I would help you out.

prolly not labor hour friendly, since I don’t think those big box stores do that in house. If they removed your suspension, your car would tie up a lift/bay for turn around time.

If you had a “spare” suspension set, you’d pay for install twice.

There’s a bit to unpack here. I agree with whoever said there’s a wrench flat on the TRD Pro coilovers. It seems that either that wrench flat was broken off or something else. Strange.

The Westcot kit means it was taken apart and whoever reassembled them obviously left out a washer/bushing in the assembly. So, it will require decompressing the spring and removing the top hat to replace the missing part(s).

Someone else mentioned how they prefer the Eibach extended springs over the Westcot kit… 100% agreed. If you’re needing to take the cooler apart, maybe replace with the Westcot kit with Eibach extended springs? More labor required as the Westcot bottom preload spacer will need to be pulled off. Might not be worth it for you.

Lastly, are you technically inclined? If so, you can safely decompress a coilover spring and remove with the on-vehicle method. I did this when replacing the stock springs with the Eibach extended springs. It’s much safer than the off-the-shelf spring compressors and can be done with standard tools (wrenches, jacks and jack stands). If this isn’t something you’re familiar with, don’t attempt. The reason I’m asking, if you’re going to attempt to remove the coilovers yourself, there’s only one extra step required to decompress and remove the springs. At that point, you could replace the missing parts yourself. If you’re going to just take your truck in somewhere, forget everything I just said.
