I picked up my 2018 Tacoma last week & just noticed something...

The deck rail system for the bed does not have a deck rail against the cab, only the sides. It that the same on all? It does have two holes in the center that look like there for a factory accessory.

I might pull the one off my 08 before I sell it...

The 3rd gens don't come factory with one. I installed it separately. The holes you see there are for the factory tonneau cover mount

Thanks. I feel stupid not noticing it. I used the back rail somewhat often.

When you installed one separately, did you use an old one or order a new one? Did youy grind down the "hole" ridges for a snug fit?

No grinding is necessary and you will utilize the same bolts as well. Both 2nd and 3rd gen are the same rails. I bought the 2nd gen rail because it was less $.

You do not use those holes. There will be torxheads that hold that part on. Remove those and bolt the rail and the factory piece that is there on. Use the hardware that is holding it on now. The old one is the same part, just take it off your 08.

Got it. I did not look closely. It mounts below the upper rail.

    Thanks.

Yup. You can get the rail off Amazon if you really need it too. I think its only $50 (but you already have an '08 so you're probably good)

Another little tip. I was annoyed with the height difference between the front and side rails. When you install the front accessory rail, look under the existing upper rail. There is some foam tape there. It is not very thick, but makes a slightly noticeable difference in height with it removed.

Reviving an old but relevant thread. I needed the head bed rail for my 2017 and have had one on my Amazon list for months. Then I saw it was only $43 at my local dealer. Called and he said it would be $300+ for the 2017! I went by and showed him the part number and testimonials that it fit to which he replied that the 2017 is totally different than the 2nd Gen, according to his computer. So we both took the "2nd gen" part out to my truck for a test fitting and proved it fits. He was still skeptical but I just popped it on with a perfect fit. I've looked and can't even find the one that is officially 3rd gen.

There is no official 3rd Gen part. We just order the 2nd Gen just like you did.

This is on our list of items to add to our 2021. Used the front rail all the time on our 09.
