Its easy, you just slice the tape with a box cutter into thin/small strips or whatever works well and isn't visible when the badge is right side up.

Tape the badge locations for reference

Use thick fishing like to floss them off (i used 20lb)

Get the good off the back and sand the badges

2-3 coats of matte black (metal/plastic bonding spraypaint)

2 coats of satin clear coat (satin not matte)

    3M tape on the back

Stick them back on using the tape

Thats how I didit. Use your garage and do it when there's low humidity. Be careful not to spray the coats too rapidly without a good amount of time in between. I'm anal and wanted it to look perfect so I waited awhile and waited a day I think between the matte black and satin clearcoat. I was driving around for a day or two with the masking tape on my truck while I waited.

I checked at my dealer to see if they’d sell the 2018 matte black badges. I don’t remember exactly but they did have them for around $250 for the set I think.

Gen 3, been around for what now, almost 4 years and no OEM badges? This is retarded.
I'm wanting a set as well.

It's getting them back on that's the tricky part. I saw where one member purchased a truck used. The previous owner used that 3m adhesive glue to put them on. Removing the emblems also removed the paint. Ouch. The only real way to put them back on is with tape and that's a giant pain to cut and piece in there. I removed mine and didn't look back.

He shouldn't have used glue that was a huge mistake. It took a little while to set the tape up on all my badges, but it was worth it to me.

Plasti dip is super easy to apply, i did it to mine and it was only$7. If you dont like plasti dip, just remove the emblem and paint it black yourself. Why pay almost $100 for black emblems if you have to take to OG ones off anyways. If you use plasti dip, remember to use a toothpick for the A and O in tacoma to remove the inner dip in the letters. The toothpick works perfectly.

Do not do that. If you are OCD you will regret it. Once you get them off you will be happy. Once you paint them you will be happy. When you try and put them back on, how are you going to do it? Double sided tape? Not a good idea. You will have to cut around the letters etc.

Buy the cheapest unused set you can find on eBay or wherever. Paint them and then apply. Use tape before removing your original set to mark off every corner and reference point you can and then remove. That way you will put the painted ones on perfectly.

    Example of mine:

Heat them up with a blow dryer on low, use fishing line, then clean the truck off and the old adhesive... Clean and sand the badges with 220 grit sandpaper, then prime/spray paint the badges. Buy new VHB and you're golden!

What you told him to do is pretty much just as much work. It's really not that difficult to put 3M tape on the badges

I personally put a satin clear coat on mine after the flat black paint, but you have to be careful and make sure you wait a day or so after painting to spray the clear coat.

If I hadn’t tried it before I would agree. It’s a pain in the ass to cut around all the letter and keep it to where you can’t see the tape at all. It’s literally taping, removing, painting, and reapplying. He would have to do all those things if he did it the way he said he was going to.

I painted the ones on my 16 and I’m about to tackle the ones on my new 18. It is pretty easy. I’ll document it.

I used satin clear coat too, the flat black was almost chalky. Used painters tape to mark everything for placement. It's easy to buy overlays, but with a little work (easy work), it will always feel better knowing you made it look good.

My boss (a mentor) preaches, "Take time and do things right the first time, even if it takes longer or it's more difficult. The second time will be easier, you'll become more efficient and learn."

I did like 5 or 6 coats of flat black (plenty of drying time in between) and it matches the fender flares perfectly on the OR.
