Actually, Toyota is a "bleeding edge" company. Just because you don't get to see the new tech does not mean it does not exist. Here's how it works in a large OEM:
-Somebody (focus group, marketing, engineering, some punk kid with an earring in their nose and pink hair with their PhD in design... whoever) dreams up an idea. Usually in a bar (not for everybody but it works for me)
-Somebody else decides if we need it, is it cool, does it solve a problem... whatever, or do we need to build it for test.
-The next person builds it and puts everybody behind bulletproof lexan, says "hold my beer and watch this" and they start it up (bleeding edge tech right there)
-It's amazing but a bit harsh
-Now they tune it and mod it, mod it and tune it for awhile.
-Next they test the shit out of it. Hot, cold, high, low, loaded and unloaded. Rinse and repeat.
-Somebody then figures out where they can use a "version" of it (now the bleeding edge starts to dull)
-Start the process of changing that killer tech into just sorta cool tech.
-It gets incorporated into a design that will be produced 5-7 years from now
-It gets "tuned" over the next few years to adjust to emerging trends (bleeding edge now becomes a butter knife)
    -It gets manufactured
    -It gets presented
    -People think its new tech.

There you go. That cool, brand new tech you see in a new vehicle of any type is probably 5-8 years old. It started life as bleeding edge and got dumbed down for the masses. This is how the design world works. I know the process. I live it. Every company has killer tech. The public never sees it or hears about it until they are ready for it. Also, it takes a lllloooonnnnggg time to produce a new model vehicle. Something as simple as a new die for stamping a fender could take 18 months to get set up.
Right now, believe it or not, the 4th gen Tacoma is designed and the process for building it is already started. Yes, there will be revisions to it for the next few years as the requirements change, but yes, it's done. It has to be, because of the length of time from concept to production.
What really should blow your mind is that the FIFTH Gen "bleeding edge" tech and concept is already being dreamed up and tech is being tested...

In 1990 ford owned 11% of Cummins. Those shares were bought back in 1997. Ford did use cummins engines in f650's up till 2014.
