I'm thinking they won't do it... Let's go best case and say they steal 33% of tacoma sales and 33% of canyon/colorado sales... that's what, about 100,000 Rangers a year? And then they might get another 100,000 sales from the Ford faithful -- but those 100,000 would be at the expense of the high-profit F150 line. Assuming the ranger would be a lower profit margin vehicle than the F150, it doesn't make a good case for Ford to do it.

200,000 Rangers at 2/3rds the profit of an F150 versus 100,000 F150's at full profit. It makes sense. Those aren't the numbers btw, but just for example even if they lose a few F150 sales the volume of new sales will make up for it. That's what GM is experiencing right now with the Colorado. I'm sure Ford didn't think the mid size market would come back but they are ready in case it does, and projections show it's coming back.

Not to mention development costs for the Ranger will be low. Use the same 8 speed and 2.7 L that is going in the F150, add on a 4 gas banger from the Transit Connect and maybe a a Diesel option, and your basically done except for some small changes to meet collision standards in North America. Just reusing F150 and Transit parts they can put several different engine and transmission combinations out without much development work or effort. Oh, and they will likely change that front end to match the F150. Got to keep the Ford look over here right.

With the exception of driving on the wrong side of the road, this is an incredibly American commercial (you had your speakers on, right?) Funny they don't even sell it here.

Highly doubtful Ford would give a new Ranger much better MPG than the F-150. Last thing they want to do cannibalize sales from their darling F-150. Same reason why a full size Silverado only gets 2 mpg less than a Colorado.

I disagree. Look at how many people are freaking out over the 2016 Tacoma MPG. It is a huge factor. More so in mid-size trucks which are more often used as daily drivers.

A Ranger still has to push almost the same amount of air as an F150. I'm willing to guess 2 mpg with the same engine is about all the difference Ford will get anyways between the Ranger and F150.

    Mah bad.

I knew the F150 was getting more gears on both the Raptor and normal editions, I didn't look closely at how many though. Point is off the shelf components to make this Ranger class leading are readily available.

CAFE is pushing this. Watch for the next automatic from GM with 38 gears.

even if the ranger gets the good o'l 6 speed out of the old one its still going to be very close to 30mpgs which is nothing to turn a nose at. especially with 325hp on tap

If they made an aluminum Ranger with 2.7 EcoBoost I bet it could close in towards 30 mpg. Of course, you don't get cutting edge MPG tech on less-expensive vehicles. All of that stuff goes to full size trucks first then trickles down years later.

It all depends. If they have to retool the whole factory, which they do to move from the Focus to the Ranger, they may just say F it and go to aluminum. It could be wishful thinking, but then again Ford loves to overkill on innovations lately. Look at how they priced the F150. It's not any more than a GM but has all that aluminum plus a twin turbo motor that eat into the profits. Ford wants to lead, not follow. Following leads to the failures GM went through in the mid 2000's.

Maybe 30 mpg highway, but still around 18-19 mpg in city.

I'd love to own an F150. Great mileage lots of horsepower and tons of space... problem is the truck is huge (all full size included) and i will never find a parking space in a garage or on the street for the pig without worrying if someone in a POS saturn just dragged a mirror the whole length. I love mid size trucks since they can do about 90% of the things you want out of a truck but are also compact enough you can take them everywhere. I work at Ford and catch so much shit for a Tacoma. But i would have kept with the ranger if they updated it and kept building them. Love my Tacoma dont get me wrong but the new 2016 doesn't impress me at all, new Tundra is a joke at it can't even get into the 20s MPG, and I havent had the best experience with Toyota Dealers lately (all to full of themselves). So i'm gonna hang onto my 2010 and see how this all plays out

Ford just retooled a plant for aluminum right?

I am just guessing here, but I would think that they would set it up to run more than just F-150 parts in aluminum. And, if I think that way, I'm sure the big bosses with their fancy offices do as well.

Ford is either attacking the #1 spot, or currently reupholstering the seat.

"Insurance". I know its a hassle.

I cant imagine parking spots being that small. ?!?

We park mega cabs with 8 foot beds and dual rear wheels all the time. No issues.....

shit forgot about the insurance jump as well on the full size trucks. Currently live in Ann Arbor MI and the parking garage spots are Narrow AF. When my Tacoma is on both lines thats how i know its bad. Most full size trucks in there are almost brushing mirrors. granted everywhere is different just my bitch whine and complaint. I'd also rather parallel park my Access cab over your Mega Cab with an 8 foot bed. haha
