2018 Tacoma 60k miles. blown cylinder and cracked head

They do a tear down and give you a cause?

 

I had a third party shop help me out with the rebuild and couldn't find any cause other than heat damage in the cylinder. The builder told me he'd seen similar engine failure in some 4.0's he rebuilt but I was the first 3.5 he came across with the failure. We assumed oil starvation to the cylinder causing it to overheat and eventual stress to the rod causing it to fail, but no we couldn't pin a specific fault anywhere.

 

Curious if there was an issue with the direct injection causing that cylinder to overheat. Might be worthwhile to have your injectors flow tested if you’re reusing them.

 

My li’l Taco, with its shitty minivan engine, has been flawless! The transmission shifts smoothly. The engine runs great & it does everything I ask of it. For nearly 5 years, it’s been the best overall truck I’ve ever had.

Its quality far surpasses that of my previous 1997 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins & my 2010 F-150. In fact, I always forget what a piece of shit truck I have until I read the posts of the hardcore Illuminati members of this forum.

Thank you, Tacoma World, for reminding me of what a terribly engineered & anemic vehicle this really is. I was in grave danger of actually enjoying this “truck” and not being a whiny 1st world blowhard asshole who is incapable of being satisfied. Yikes! Close call!

To show my appreciation, I will commence with the complaining & bashing tomorrow. However, you’ll have wait until I’m done completing all the work around my large rural property with my TRD Off-Road Sienna!

In the meantime, could you fellas figure out when I should change my oil? It could be due! I can’t decide between 5k or 10k miles. I heard a consensus was recently reached!

 

Seriously thank you for posting this. I need to stay off the internet because when I’m driving my truck I fall in love with it and then come visit these forums and convince myself it’s a ticking time bomb pos and I should have traded it for a tundra yesterday. Wish we could get some some more designated “High mileage” or “love my truck” threads going for the 3rd gen but they never seem to gain any traction.

 

Should have traded for the tundra last year, the new one is a ticking bomb. There’s high mileage and truck love for 3rd gens, the 4 cylinder guys.

 

Yeah I am bummed I missed the chance to get a new tundra with the V8. I just couldn’t afford the extra cost at the time but no way would I ever by the new 22’ with the turbos. Exactly my point there’s very few people out there talking about their long term experience with the 3.5 Tacos. Been out almost 7 years now I’d expect more folks talking about their long term owner experience and mileage.

 

Wish I had gotten a v8 tundra. Was about $10k more than my sierra similar equipped and consumes a lot more fuel, but I’ve decided their worth it. But your right, I’m surprised not more hype about the longevity of the 3.5’s. I have a buddy with over 250k on his ‘17

 

I don’t understand what some of these people want. The Tacoma does everything it’s designed for just fine . Plus it looks awesome . I have my for over 3 years and I still love to drive it as much as the first day I bought it . I think you are either a truck person or a car person and if your a car person and go out and buy a truck your not going to like the way a truck handles and rides .

3k in the bed/roof rack? Tacoma is a wrong truck for that.

 

200+ isn't that big of a deal nowadays especially if it is highway miles. This isn't the 1980s where the wheels fall off after 100k miles. Of course we still have peeling white paint

 

Then there were m 1966 Plymouth Valiant 200 with the venerable Slant-Six and my 1970 Challenger with the wonderful 340; both saw the far side of 200,000 miles and were still rockin' the last time I drove them (sold the Valiant, the Challenger got stolen and stripped).

 

Our family 1965 Pontiac Parisienne. 4 door, 283ci V8, manual 3 on the tree. 0-60mph in one week…

Was my fathers car. He used it for numerous hunting trips throughout BC and up to Alaska highway. Moose hunting, 1000 pound moose strapped to the roof was typical, plus 2 weeks of camping gear and 2 guys.

It was also used on countless trips to haul our family boat 300 miles into the BC interior for even weekend camping trips. All FSR roads in very bad shape, and outside of Highway #1 and Highway #3, there were very few paved roads at that time in the BC interior.

Never a modification, no one did that in those days to a family car.

It was used on far more bad FSRs than guys take their trucks on today. About 20-30 trips per year, hunting, lake fishing, ocean fishing (haul boat out to Port Alberni from Vancouver), and a few ice fishing trips per year.

He sold it to my brother when it had about 185K miles on it. $250.

Years later my brother sells it to me, it had 240K miles and I paid $250. Like driving a boat. Also, good back seat memories from that car, big like a bed.

I sold it my brothers friend when it had about 300K miles and I got $350 for it.

He drove it to over 400K miles and he sold it for $425. Damn prices on used vehicles, always going up…

Basically no rust and in all that time just maintenance and replace a clutch, radiator, starter motor, water pump, brakes. Typical replacements at part EOL. No power anything, not brakes or steering, nothing. Basic car.

Most reliable vehicle I have ever experienced in my 49 years of driving. Bullet proof really. Never a major repair, and never an engine failure despite way extreme usage conditions.

 

Not much to break really if you think about it as long as the maintenance was kept up not many things to go wrong. No power anything. A fresh set of plugs, cap , rotor and points. Keep the carb clean and adjusted and you were good to go. I used to keep a set of points in my glove box as a back up.And the plugs you could change in about 15 minutes while you smoked a cigarette with your other hand . Plenty of pics of me messing with those cars back then.

 

There's truth to this especially the lack of gadgets. I've driven mostly older vehicles (like 8-12 years old by the time I got them, starting in the early 1990s) and when possible I preferred little if any power/extras since around the time I acquired the vehicle was when those things would start to break. Add to that where I was buying at auctions and had limited ability to test the vehicle prior to purchase

 

Yup, not much to break down in those old ones. Do all the work myself as the engine layouts were so simple and lots of room to work.

Miss those simple spark plug changes, 2 minutes per plug. I still have all of my old gear, timing light, boxes of carb parts and such. Keeping them just in case time travel becomes possible.

 

Wish I had kept my 1990 Camry 4 cyl manual. Had power brakes, power steering and AC. That’s it. Was a good car. Would’ve lasted forever. And it was Indigo - very nice color.

 

This was unheard in the past, my 2007 4Runner V8/made in Japan never burned a drop of oil.
