2019 2.7 4x4. Ditched the little 245s that came on it and put falken 265/75s on it with aluminum wheels. Won’t be going any larger. Truck has an approx 400 pound shell on it that doesn’t hardly ever come off. Frequently tow 1500 pounds. After the tires it now gear hunts pretty bad at 70mph or above. I’ll also be adding full front bumper with winch, skids, and sliders. I was thinking of 4:56s but I’m starting to think that won’t be enough. How about 4:88s? I want to drive at 80mph and be able to stand it without it being at 3k rpms in 5th or 6th (if 6th ever kicks in) gear. Maybe throw a header and catback exhaust on as well to help it breath a lil better ?After all the extra added weight I’m going to lift the front approx 1.5 inches and compensate the back as well with heavy leafs. I love the simplicity of the 4 cylinder and don’t want a 3.5 and don’t want to fork over 40k for a 4R. How farfetched is my plan? Help a brotha out.

After a lot of those mods, it gets harder and harder to drive at 80mph with the 4cyl.

But if it were me, the only choice would be 5.29's. It's the largest ratio you can get. You have a double overdrive transmission, so you'll be turning about 2650 RPM at 80mph. It give you the option to go to a bigger tire also (which would lower your rpm).

Honestly bro, I cant imagine how bad that would be with my V6, much less a 4cyl. I would look into trading it for a V6 tbh.

You’re saying at 80mph the rpms would be 2650 after 5:29s?

    http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html

It doesn't currently have the gear ratios for your transmission so you need to manually add them at the top of the form.

    Gear ratios:

    1 3.600:1
    2 2.090:1
    3 1.488:1
    4 1.000:1
    5 0.687:1
    6 0.580:1
    R 3.732:1

Correct me if I am wrong, but I was told the my `18 SR5 AC 4X4 2.7 came with 4.88s.

Don't believe Toyota ever offered 4.88s from the factory.

Google says, 2018 4x4 Tacomas came with a 4.30 Diff Gear.

I don't understand what's involved in regearing. To regear to 4.56 or 4.88, whatever, this means swapping out the rear differential gears, correct, not the transmission gears?

Yes, front and rear diff gears if you have 4x4.

Thanks. Yes, mine is 4x4. So I would have to replace the front and rear differentials in order to regear, correct? What is the formula for deriving the final drive from the combination of the transmission and differential gearing?

Easiest thing to do is use an online calculator like www.grimmjeeper.com/gears. You need to input your transmission ratios. It looks like you have a 5MT so your ratios are:

    1 4.31:1
    2 2.33:1
    3 1.33:1
    4 1.000:1
    5 0.79:1

R 4.31:1 (I think this is reverse, but doesn't really matter much)

But ARE those the ratios? Most folks here cite these ratios 2016/2017 5MT, based on the "2016 Tacoma Product Information" document that circulates on this forum:

    1: 3.95
    2: 2.06
    3: 1.44
    4: 1.00
    5: 0.81
    R: 4.22

I've seen both of these ratio sets referred to on this site and I've never got a definitive answer which ratio set is correct.

Those are the 2nd gen 5MT ratios.
