The other issue is that the ECU probably needs to be swapped. But the new ECU might not be a direct swap because of dual VVT in the newer 2.7L. So you'd have to answer that question. But mechanical, it's probably a pretty easy swap.

Toyota has a lower gear ratio of 5.71's but they are weak.
I have the 3RZ motor, auto trans and currently run 285-75-16's. At 70mph on the freeway, I turn 2750 rpm's with 5.29's.

Yup I’m certain that is wrong. I know for certain because I just put a 2016 5MT in my truck and I checked the ratios in the transmission before I installed it.

Thank you very much. I've been looking to hear from someone who has physically examined the R156F. Do you know if the differential ratio listed in that document is incorrect as well? Is it actually 4.3, like the 6spd manuals?

That I don’t know. But I’m guessing it has a taller rear gear than the 6MT or the 6AT. Both of those transmissions have pretty tall overdrive ratios.

You ever try going 60 in reverse? Its such a pain when you add 35s.

I would re-gear first. It solves a lot of problems while introducing few (if any). Supercharging the engine is just putting a big bandaid on the issue and then you have to worry about the kit lasting as long as the motor (or worse, reducing the life of the motor).

Also, while re-gearing, you can throw in a locker or LSD or both (FR-S/86 LSD Front and ARB AirLocker Rear is a good combo, I've heard).

Educate me, but I’ve never heard of installing a limited slip diff up front. My understanding is they usually put the LSD in the rear, and a locker up front so when you are unlocked, your steering is not affected when you are driving around town. An LSD up front might do very weird things on wet pavement etc.

    I dunno. Maybe I’m wrong.

Well, it was recommended to me awhile back by another Arizona guy here on the forums. I might be mis-remembering it. I believe it shouldn't engage when you're in 2WD though, since there's no power being sent, but I could be wrong.

I'm gonna eat crow on this until I can find the post.

Ahah. I had not thought of that. I suppose you are right.

I know the old Nissan Patrols that are so popular in Australia are typically LSD rear and locked front, but that’s probably because the Nissan LSD has a reputation for being indestructible and really good at what it does.
