Here's my take. Jeeps (of the Wrangler DNA) are pretty cool, and pretty much everyone wants one at one point or another in their life. And a lot of us get one. I had a 97. But they lose appeal once you live with it for a while... It's a pain to remove and put up the soft top. The ride gets old. They're pretty exhausting on the highway. The sound systems are always fighting road and wind noise. But when you're 23 and playing around, that's fine. But when you have a commute, a wife, a kid... you're fine trading some of of the rugged adventure look for something a little quieter, more comfortable, and useful. The Tacoma fits that niche for people like us. At the end of the day I think the Tacoma and the Jeep truck don't even really compete... one is about a fantasy image and one is about practicality. And both should do fine.

$70k?!? Not even remotely. These will start low-mid 30s and top out in low-mid 40s just like any other Jeep. The only reason Brutes are up in that range is because they have to completely re-do the back half of it. Plus its a super niche product so they can get by charging ludicrous amounts. A main stream from the factory Jeep truck cannot and will not command those prices.

My other vehicle is a Wrangler and this is spot on.
BUT, it looks like the cab top is removable and that could make me want to act like I was 23 again.

My man, if all of that stuff spells quality for you then you need to get under the hood of a car to see what Is actual quality and what is not. Quality is a subjective thing I do understand, but the more I see these newer cars getting released and getting my hands on them to work on them, the more plastic and less lasting they get. Planned obsolescence. These new cars and even trucks now are designed to last maybe 5 years before they start falling apart.

The J truck or what ever they call it could have this power plant.

    R2.8

If I'd does it will be an incredible truck

There is a direct bolt in for this motor in a standard jeep.

I get what you're saying. And you're obviously correct in that the physical design/assembly of many components was done better "back in the day." I feel exactly the same way about some of the older German vehicles versus their newer versions. But there's more to the picture.

Someone recently did a fairly in-depth comparison of a Land Cruiser and 4Runner on ExPo. The results were as expected: the LC's components were beefier and in just about all ways "better" than the same components on the T4R. The conclusion was summarized as something like "the 4Runner will last a decade, while the LandCruiser will last your life."

Does that make the 4Runner a poorly-built vehicle? Not at all.
Is the $40k T4R a worse buy than the $90k LC? Depends on what your plans and needs are. I'd guess that for many people, investing that extra $50k, then buying another new vehicle in 10 years (and pocketing the $$ difference) will give much more value than keeping the same, old LC for the rest of their lives.

In my industry, with a certain tool, we like to say that out of the box, it gets you 90% of the functionality in 10% of the effort. We can take the remaining budget and easily customize the tool to get to the 100% of required functionality, and end up with a slick solution with a very high degree of "quality feeling." The generic tool will be easy and cheap to support. On the flip side, we can build the same product entirely from scratch, it will be lean and mean and won't have any of the excess that the one-size-fits-all tool will have, but it also won't be nearly as slick, will have limited support, and will take a lot more effort to maintain.

It's the same thing with the 3rd and 2nd gen Tacomas. There is a lot more visible and usable quality in the 3rd gen than the 2nd gen, even if under the hood it's not as lean and mean as its predecessors were. If the new design of a few under-the-hood components will decrease their lifespan to 10 years instead of the 2nd gen's 15 years (and again, at this point, this is nothing but speculation - the components may last just as long, if not longer), but the vehicle adds more usability and bang-for-the-buck in every day use, is it not a win for the consumer?

I don't disagree that this Tacoma is not the greatest, but I was talking about this list:

    http://www.jdpower.com/ratings/study/Initial-Quality-Study-(IQS)-by-Make/1222ENG

Jeep starts the whole Chrysler line-up at #18... it goes down from there. Ironically, Honda and Acura were down below there as well, so not sure why they have had issues other than the Takata airbag problem, so I'm wondering if that is driving them down.

Is it just me, or does the rear bumper extend about 3 feet past the centerline of the rear wheels? Horrible departure angle. They are making these things waaaaaay too damned big in general. Plus, you have the reliability of a Chrysler product.

    No thanks.
