So Monday morning on my way to work my 2019 Tacoma Off Road shuddered for about 20 seconds then the check engine light began to flash I immediately got off of the road and had the truck taken to a mechanic. Initial check found #1 cylinder is full of coolent. The mechanic said it was above his ability so I towed it to a dealership. I thought a blown head gasket. They have informed me that it has a cracked block. I'm the only owner, 88000 miles, never been hot max on computer was 217 degrees, and oil changed ahead of time every time. Has anyone heard of this issue?

I don’t think anyone can give you more than wild guesses without much more information.

I was ok when I thought it blew a head gasket and was ready to pony up the $3500 to fix it. I mean shit happens I got a faulty / weak gasket. But a cracked block with no abuse or excessive heat / hard driving is a problem I wasn't prepared for. That was a flaw in the block when it came out of the casting. Looks like the wall between the water jacket and cylinder was not cast properly.

What more information do you need? Its never been off road other than abound the farm. Its probably only been in 4 x 4 about 20 to 25 times. The computer scan told the dealership everything and that this was the first sign of any issue and that the engine ran for less than 5 minutes after the light came on until it was at the dealership. Even told me that it had never towed a load of any size.

I hope they will work with me to some degree. I don't expect it to be a free repair but a little help will go along way.

Buy a used motor from lkq or eBay or buy a wrecked whole truck from a auction, take the engine, part the rest out and you’ll probably break even

Dang you 3rd gen guys have some expensive engines. Thought since they are so reliable, there would be a ton of them for sale, making them cheap….nope.

That's rough, hopefully it won’t cost you too much since it sounds like it was a flaw in the engine versus something you did.

With the style of construction these engines have, it's amazing that they all don't crack. The steel liners have a bazillion stress risers cast right in.

It's happened a few times on here. There is a dedicated thread for engine failures of the 3rd gen.

You confused yourself trying to be the quickest 2nd gen troll to the punch- if they are reliable, they are still on the road (and high demand for the one, making less available.
    supply and demand be dammed

No. It’s just like any other parts. Most used parts come from crashed cars that are parted out. When a Tacoma gets rear ended really bad, they just part it out.

so a expamle of what I mean….we also have a 2015 Honda accord that I use for commuting to work. Boring car but super reliable. Bunch of them get into accidents and are parted out. But nobody needs engines, so junk yards are over run with those engines. They need to get rid of them, so they sell them cheap. Engine for a 2015 accord is about $500-$700. Cause nobody needs them.

same thing with the 2nd gens. Nobody needs the trannys so they cheap. But the engine is very in demand due to all the early ones with the bad head gasket. So the 2nd gen engine is like $2500 and up.

I’m honestly curious why the 3rd gen engines are so dang pricey.
