Toyota has gotten so cheap with these trucks. Its not like they have a lot of features to begin with.....might as well take one away and im sure, raise the price.

The space is still there but now it's available for other purposes. I shoe horned my compressor and tank in front of the wheel well but with a newer model I might be inclined move it back here. For the sake of 3rd gen owners I hope meso follows up on his hint. Maybe even do something clever enough to attract 2nd gen owners like making it taller inside or making interchangeable recessed plates Utilizing the stock cover.

Not true... the SR and SR5 still have one on the right side. Only the TRD/Limited/Pro go to the split small box / 110V Outlet design on the right.

The SR and SR5 has that is because they don't have the AC outlet.

I don't own anything so valuable or delicate as to justify Pelican storage boxes. BUT - if the Tuffy boxes are prone to degradation, would a Pelican box on hinge end be a practical way to access this empty space? the case would need to be deep enough to have the latches & lid set proud of the bed liner but certainly not as far out as the wheel wells.

or would the already fragile bed liner be compromised with the cut out?

It's a good idea but I'm not sure if any of the boxes would be narrow enough to fit below the platform support notches yet still be long and deep enough to utilize the space. Plus, having the lid still attached forces install to be either the thickness of the lid above the floor or only open ~90* if opened upwards. The bed liner isn't a liner, it's a composite bed period, the exterior bedwalls are mostly a cosmetic component reinforced at the front corners, rear light bays, and wheel well stays. you want to avoid square corner cuts that promote cracking and make clean radius cuts with smoothed edges and reinforce where possible but given how long the oem cubbys have been around I don't think the holes themselves are an issue if kept to a reasonable size.

What should you use to cutout the bed?

An air body saw would be ideal but I imagine you could make due with something else.

Oh man, that sucks. I love that cubby. I routed my rear diff breather there and store my tie downs in there.

I would use a hole saw - slow speed- to cut the 4 corners and then connect with a saber saw. use a formica blade which cuts on the downstroke.

some cowboy is coming along now to tell you i'm a pussy and he will do it with his 4" cordless grinder.

My brother already suggested this method. That is why I was checking. Thank you.

You do realize that Toyota did this exact thing with the second gens. There used to be a small cubby above the drivers side wheel well.
    They are very predictable.
