    two cautions:

whichever method you use, wear breathing & seeing protection. you don't want this crap from the cutting dust in your body or any other orifices.

whichever method you use, don't make square corners. and may the fiberglassed reinforced gods help you if you end up overlapping the cuts.

even a 1/2" twist bit radius (1/4") is less likely to telegraph stress cracks from the corners than a 90 degree hole. bigger radius you get the better odds in your favor.

some cowboy is coming along now to tell you i'm a pussy and he will do it with his 4" cordless grinder with no dust mask or safety glasses.

Those 2 small open cubbies above the fenderwells on the earlier 2nd Gens were pretty cool.

2019 TRD Pro - it can be done. The hardest thing was getting the washer and nylon locknut on the center bolt @ the top center.
I actually made a template from measuring the other side with the box out.

Saw some YT videos of the 2020 Taco getting the driver's side compartment back. Found that kind of interesting.

Will be duplicating your project this week. Bought my cubby and door on eBay; came with the 6 mounting bolts, did not come with the bolt receivers that mount to the bed itself. Where did you source yours?

I've got the same question. Where did you get the bolt receivers that sit in the fiberglass?

They’re called either rivnuts or nutserts. You can install them either with or without specialized tools but either way get a few extras to practice with. For 1/4 x 20 aluminum rivnuts I just use a 2” grade 8 bolt with a 5/16 coupling but and a few washers. There’s also a molly type called a jack nut you can use for slightly thicker materials. Amazon has them but I got mine locally.

I may do this to my truck, but now I’m concerned about stress cracks...

Shouldn’t be a problem if you do it right with radiused corners and smooth sanded cuts. Eliminate the places where the stress cracks start.

Updates on how these have held up? Mostly if any cracks developed?

I’ve cut a few holes from a few inches square to as big as a cubby and with rounded corners there’ve been no issue in the few years I’ve had them.
