It's not that I expected out of this world performance, but dropping 2 gears on a hill that wouldn't tire out an asthmatic gofer gets a little old after a while.

Reliability LOL. You are living in the past. As is Toyota with its weak engine and drive train. You are a new fanboi. I get it . I have been around awhile and I happened to be disappointed in Toyota and the 3nd Gen. I am allowed to vent. I owned too many Tacomas. The 3rd gen is the worst of all of them

The Ranger does have sports car acceleration so that's something that sold me. And they do it with a 4 cylinder. at easy 21 city and 27 highway,

I have realistic performance needs as well. Tacoma did not fill them at the basic levels of a constantly shifting 6 speed and an engine that has to redline to perform

The 2016 was my FORTH Tacoma in 10 years. I know what I am talking about. I have owned two-second gens before the 16. Obviously, I like the second gen. I bought two of them and looked forward to the 3rd Gen.......Misplaced trust in Toyota on that one.

The Ford is just the better truck right now for me. I will still read up on peoples issues and pleasant surprises and opine as long as I am here. SO don't get all butthurt, It's another opinion from a former Tacoma fanboi....Now they will have to work for my coin.

This is the kind of shit is all over the 3rd gen forum. How people can continue to throw tens of thousands on a failed drivetrain is beyond me. Maybe they are all going to blow another $800 on a tune......Yeah, That's just like Toyota nowadays. Need the aftermarket to make it right or close to right. Toyota is the new Harley Davidson. Spend a fortune then spend another to make it run right

Luckily I got my tune on sale, was a mere 600.... Yeah still alot, but more palatable than the standard 770

My 18 has been flawless. I don’t understand all the bs complaining threads at all. Drove my father in laws 17 sport and it also drives very nice. The 3rd gens are leaps and bounds better then the 2nd gens. Mine tows great, gets awesome mileage, and looks good doing it. I honestly don’t have one complaint haha

I love mine and was getting accustomed to the tranny, but don't regret tuning it. Everything else about the truck is fantastic. Yeah it could have power driver seat, but eh that's minor. I drove down south and back, 650 miles total and averaged 24.6 mpg, so that makes me even happier hah

I don’t get the need for a tune, mine drives fine. I just took it to Reno Nevada up and over the Sierras. When I got to the steep grade I switched to S4 and cruised up. A real steep part at the top following slow drivers i dropped down to S3. I averaged 19.4 on the trip going up and 21 returning home. Would have been way better but I hit strong head winds the last 100 miles back in the Bay Area. The truck is not powerful and has tall gearing, but it drives fine and handles everything a mid size truck should handle.

    As has mine.

I could complain about the comical Toyota Navigation, but I don't use it, so I won't.
I could complain about the shitty factory sound system, but I didn't opt for the upgrade, so I wont.

A year in, I'm enjoying owning the tuck. On road, off road, in the mountains, and in the valley. No complaints

Your experience is different than mine. I have made two 200 mile round trips in my 2019 over hill and dale in the past month. My cruise control worked flawlessly. I don’t get the gear hunting I’m reading about here either. I’m completely satisfied with my truck. I have had 11 Toyota pickups since 1977 including gen 1, 2 & 3 and this one is the best yet.

As are the vast majority of people, by far. That’s why it sells so well year after year. The majority of owners (not TW lurkers) love their Tacomas.

What I see happening here, is a few OCD types work themselves into an absolute tizzy over-analyzing the minutiae of their truck until these things become the sole focus of every day of their lives. They eventually build up this Tacoma bogeyman in their minds until they freak out and sell the truck. Then they go on a campaign of trying to convince the happy 3G Tacoma owners (literally nearing a million people), that they are all crazy, and that this one negative TW hater actually knows what’s best for them. It’s laughable.

The 3G Tacoma sells hundreds of thousands of units, 4 years after release, with no major changes, because it’s an awesome truck, a great bargain, and people love it. Simple as that.

Don't kid yourself. Toyota cares about every sale and especially loyalty, EVERY car maker does. to think differently is immature and ignorant. And no Nostradamus, I am not butthurt. You would not even get a reply on a Ranger Forum LOL

I LOVE what Ford has done with the Ranger. and will put it up against any Tacoma and in fact did. I paid more for the Ranger than my 2016 and worth every penny. It's actually refreshing to step on the gas and gooooooo. The 10 speed transmission is unnoticed which is a good thing. I cannot see anyone disappointed in the Ranger, It does everything well and actually goes when the gas is stepped on and doesn't need 6000 RPMs top do it.

Design flaws LOL Lets hear them. GAs struts on the hood? power locking FORD tailgate mechanism, Android Auto B&O stereo system blows away my JBL, More towing and cargo capability, The list goes on and on. .

First I was told the automatic transmission needed 800 miles to “learn” my driving habits. I am now at 1,500 miles and the transmission doesn’t work any better; quite the opposite.

Now miscellaneous vibrations, shudders and driveline noises are popping up. I am being told to drive it 5,000 miles for some of its “early glitches” to go away.

Six weeks into it I am nowhere near getting rid of my Tacoma. But depending how things continue to develop and how severe they get, at some point I will have to start going to the dealership and getting things documented, looked at or, worse, escalated.

I like Tacoma’s looks and solidity of assembly. But I have to admit this truck ain’t the bed of roses it is made out to be.

Jeep updated the old Toledo Wrangler plant to produce Gladiator. At its height, that plant was cranking out 200,000+ Wranglers each year. But Gladiator is too niche and too expensive to sustain anywhere near those sales for more than 2-3 years.

We will be seeing $10,000 to $15,000 off Gladiators in 18+ months.

Personally, if Toyota offered the option of disc brakes on the rear, I'd not be one paying for the option. This truck stops just fine for me, and drums on the rear means two fewer brake shields and rotors to catch mud and rocks off road, which I do a lot of. "Scrrreeeeaaaaaach!" Often many times over the course of even just a mile or two, I'm stopping, backing up, and re-starting to dislodge the offending rock.

Not excited about the trans on these. BMW was my first experience with "sealed" and "adaptive" transmissions. Both of those "features" sucked then on the BMW, and they also do on the Tacoma. It's not a huge issue for me on the truck because my highway miles are quite limited, and I overcome it by limiting early upshift and gear hunting via sport mode when I am on the highway. Yes, the annoyance factor is there, but it is minimal for my driving. The Tacoma positives outweigh these negatives for me.

Were I to not regularly abuse my trucks off road miles from nowhere, perhaps a Ford or a Chevy would be an option. But as I want and need something tough, capable, and dependable, those offerings are out. The day comes this truck starts shittin' the bed on me and is not proven to be tougher and more capable than the others, then I'll look at those options (or a Tundra or 4Runner). Until then, I'm sticking with Toyotas and the track history I've had with them. I value the toughness and dependability above all else, and in those categories Toyota wins hands down.
