If you need more power then step on the pedal, otherwise, it gives you what you need. I don't get why people are so wrapped around the axle over the transmission in these trucks...

It's trying to give you better fuel economy. Use ECT button if you need a little excitement.

Ha ha I wish stepping on the gas pedal gave more power. Mine loves to rev up to 4000rpm for no reason on slight acceleration then holds it forever because it can’t decide if it should downshift or not. Toyota had it more then a week and said it was normal due to every vehicle on the lot doing the same thing. They said it was probably due to the elevation. No brand new vehicle should do that especially one costing 40k with Toyota’s reputation.

Because the automatic transmission sucks, that’s why.

I live in BC Canada which is like a roller coaster with us up and downs. And my A/T drives perfect. When I go up a hill will drop a gear if needed. As soon as I am back to flat it will kick back up and all good even while in CC. I have 0 complaints about this truck. It drives exactly how I would expect a truck to drive. I never expected the Tacoma to handle par to my old cars but I did to expect it to drive compared to my old trucks, which it does 100% and some. Obviously everyone's expectations are different , but if you buy a truck to be a truck a Tacoma is a great choice. If you buy a truck to be a car ridgeline or Ranger would have been a better choice. Sorry to hear your truck didn’t perform to your expectations but 9/10 its is the owner not the truck. When Tacoma is selling the quantity of trucks it is and maybe 1% doesn’t like it don’t think it’s the truck. And not to say yours wasn’t a lemon.

Could it be that people aren’t thoroughly test driving these trucks in many cases. Dealer let me take it for as long as I needed to. The engine/tranny could work together a little better sure. I was very satisfied with my 2016 SR5, with all tsb’s installed and love my 2019 TRD sport. The tranny gives us three modes. I have no problem finding a combination that works well for me under the conditions I drive. The cruise control works great on the flat and in hill country.

I wonder if 89 or 91/93 gas would improve things?

    i think 3 modes are:

    1) In drive
    2) in drive with ect enabled
    3) in sport mode
    4) in sport mode with ect enabled

    that's 4.

    based on my maths....

Give it a try. I won’t being doing it here in Commifornia as 91 and 93 are over $4 per gal in my area.

I also hear 99% of 3rd gen Tacoma owners make up things because how could there “beloved” truck do any wrong. I love Toyota but just reading all the complaints on here it’s more then 1%. It is probably pretty low but Toyota knows they have a problem hence all the TSBs that still haven’t fixed the issue or everyone buying software to get it fixed.

    LOL.

i drove my 07 xterra 4x4 today over lunch, then came back and took the taco out. the xterra has the 4.0 v6 and makes more torque (i have a slight tune and some light mods and always run 93 due to mods) at lower rpms. The x is faster/more responsive in the whole rpm range. She has 145k miles and have had her since she had 37 miles on her-new. You need to push the taco's skinny pedal more to get it to do it's thing. But it will do it's thing. This is designed into the truck i think, in order to meet new stricter fuel economy standards. The default mode for the taco is to save as much gas as possible. With that said, i don't care about the .5 mpgs using ect mode full time will cost, if it does in fact use more gas. With ect mode enabled, the truck run ALMOST perfect to me. I am planning to put some 93 in Sandy the taco at the 1/2 tank mark to see what if any difference i get. it's been said that these truck running on 87 cut back on timing and in the process take away power. i know for a fact some cars experience this. My 2017 jeeps patriot 4x4 auto usually runs on 87. I put 91 or 93 in it recently going to the mountains and it flew, as much as a 175hp/165 ft/lbs of torque vehicle that weight 3000 lbs can fly. One long hill climb of 6 miles duration, she jsut went without much coaxing- like usually on 87. i averaged 27mpg where i usually see 24mpg. A 10% increase BUT the fuel cost is 20% more so i will stick to the plan of 87 normally then 93 when in mountains.

so i think it's worth a shot to try 93 and see what happens. we might all be pleasantly surprised..

Why can’t some people accept that there are Tacoma owners like myself who genuinely like their trucks as they are. I have owned a 1st, 2nd and two 3rd gen (2016 AC, 2019 TRD sport) Tacoma’s and think the 3rd gen is the best. I look forward to driving it every time I get in the seat (yes, the seats fit me comfortably). As I’ve said before, I have to think people are not doing their research or thoroughly test driving these trucks long enough.

Because to accept that you like your Tacoma and it’s a good truck they have to accept they made a bad decision that wasn’t a cheap 1! ;)

Im a meat cutter/ butcher and it’s the same as when someone comes in and gets a AAA prime rib over cooks it and comes and tells me it’s the worst thing in the planet and we should be ashamed to sell for that price... but the people who do the same and love it 9/10 times won’t Come back and say they loved it. Same as anything bad reviews are always louder.

I remember when early 90s pickups had 150 hp V6 engines pushing 3800 lbs, got 17 mpg on a good day, and blew head gaskets like nobodies business. Now we're complaining about a truck with 278 hp, gets 22 mpg, and has no real failure related engine or transmission issues.

Complaining that the drivetrain doesn't live up to expectations is different than suggesting it has actual problems, or is somehow busted. If I'm not mistaken, most if not all complaints about the 3rd gen transmission have been centered around the fact that it is obsessed with keeping the engine at a low RPM.
