The problem with OP’s truck is that it’s the limited trim. Limited transmission. They govern that one at the factory. The offroad transmission is better.

Jk. Mine was fine at around 15k then I added a ton of weight to it at 22k and put on bigger tires at 27k... now I want OVtune.

I was pretty happy with my '18 right off the lot. Unfortunately, the more I drove it the worse it got. I logged complaints about throttle lag, hesitation, stumbling and brake shudder at my 5K, 10K and 15K services. Had a TSB done around 5K and at 17K my dealer did a glycol test on my trans fluid and found antifreeze it. New trans, new radiator and new trans cooler lines went it. The TSB made it a little better, but it's still the worst driving vehicle I've ever owned.

I gave some consideration to OVtune but after having a trans put in, I'm going to take that $800 and use it to lessen the hit I'll take when I trade it.

Good luck with yours OP. It seems as though people have very different experiences with these trucks. Hope your's ends on a positive note.

Only thing worse than buying a new truck that sucks to drive is coming here and people telling you, the transmission has to “learn”. It doesn’t quite work that way. It’s more of people adapting to the vehicle. Or recommending spending more money for an OVtune when it should be right in the first place. I don’t have the OVtune so can’t give feedback on it, although I hear mostly positive things. I don’t feel you should have to drop that much money to make the truck acceptable to drive. Toyota dropped the ball, bottom line. Op, you’re not the only one unhappy. It’s without a doubt the worst Toyota vehicle I have ever driven, working on cars for 14 and a half years. Sad when a Yaris, XA or old Tercel are a better ride.

Probably going to get another F150 ecoboost. The 3.5. Would love a raptor. Maybe if I can land this electrician job in my plant I’ll be able to get one. Kinda debating if I want to just dump it in a few months for a beater for a bit to save some cash for a new truck. My daughter is turning 15 so if I get a older civic, accord or corolla or something I can then pass that to her for a first car to learn how to drive and she’ll have a dependable first car, that can take a few licks and keep on ticking. I mainly only am driving back and forth to work and school currently so something that gets better gas mileage wouldn’t be so bad atm.

I did see a new blacked out RAM the other day. I used to work at a dodge dealer and most of them were always crap. I have a hard time trusting any Chrysler product. But that truck did look sure badass and the ones with that huge touch screen are nice as hell inside. Thought I seen something about them having almost 10k in rebates in a ad the other day. I might be tempted to look at them. Although I can’t stand the damn dial shifter in those and told myself I’d never buy one lol

The Tercel was on point. I had one in high school and the fucker got 53 to the gallon and blew up at 330,000 miles.

You can uninstall the tune at any time so that it's undetectable. Crazy concept I know.

To all those saying use the ETC button, the tranny needs to learn, or you'll get used to it.

You don't get used to it, the tranny and engine tuning from factory is garbage. It just is. If not for OVTune I would've got rid of the truck long ago. If you don't want to install a simple program on your truck or think it's too expensive, then my suggestion would be to trade and stop complaining on the forums. Everything else is wishful thinking.

We’ve got one at work the guys use for getting to the job sites, can’t kill it. A Tercel.

Few guys at work have Rams, 2013-14 around that and the boxsides are bleeding rust and the rockers are rotted out.

It's actually the MT-6 but that is almost splitting hairs. I think regardless of what I end up doing in terms of getting a Gen-3 or not, I am keeping this truck, it is just too good, rusted frame and all.

In my experience driving around town there is zero problems with the trans and how it shifts. On the highway at 65-70 speeds I'll sometime see some shift issues but I find it's most noticeable and annoying if the road is fairly congested where spacing between vehicles is fairly close. Here the down shift to compensate for a hill or some such, affects your spacing with the traffic and becomes something you need to watch very closely. Thankfully I don't see this very often as we are pretty flat around this part of the country.

I think the engine is really under powered for this size truck. I pulled next to an early model Tundra the other day and was taken aback as I sat eye to eye with the driver and it seemed we where in the same sized vehicle.

Well, you have to understand just how built this motor really is.

Cometic head gaskets, ARP head studs, (almost a requirement if you apply boost to an open deck motor), TRD S/C, smaller than stock pulley, bigger injectors, 7th injector, exhaust cam gears, 170 degree thermostat, UCON-Flex engine management unit that completely by passes the stock ECU, higher rate intercooler pump, larger fuel pump, full headers and exhaust, cold air intake, on and on and on.

This is a truly spectacular motor that sees full synthetic oil changes every 3-4K miles & a clean air filter swap every 2K. Last week out of curiosity and after I realized I might need a new truck, a friend and I did a borescope inspection of the cylinders and then went on to do a wet and dry compression test. The cross hatch on the cylinders is flawless, the compression test shows all 6 to be right at 10 PSI less than brand new and this in on a motor with 194K miles on it.

I have a lot to consider in looking at the Gen-3, so much so that I know I am keeping this truck no matter what I choose to do.

Sorry I disagree. The transmission is a fucking joke (computer). It Improves a little. But not what it should.

I bought a brand new 18. Has 8k miles. And it hasn’t “learned” shit. It sucks.

Oh I’m sorry. I guess I didn’t do my research enough. Did they change motors/transmission in them? I assumed they had the same setup in them.

    3 aftermarket solutions:

ECT Always on mod: (or press button every time you get in truck)

Shift Sense Pro (SSP): Sport mode shifted automatically for you, not allowing up shifting before certain speeds

Orange Virus Tune (OVTune): A bit expensive all encompassing performance and shifting ECU tune

Re-gear: most expensive option right now. To keep RPM’s higher

    1 OEM:

Toyota TSB for shifting issues. Not as good as any of the aftermarket “solutions”

I think a SSP will take care of your issue. And Its pretty cheap.
