I wish that I had kept my old 2005 TRD OR. That sucker would smoke the back tires from a stand still, and it was an Automatic. My new truck will go but not like the old one. Comparing the two, my new truck (2016) won't pull a greasy string out of a gnats ass. But I will say that I get much better fuel economy now compared to the 2005.

So I guess you didn't like it? :D

I've had a frontier for 12 years. I won't say it's like driving a luxury car, but it certainly has been a good vehicle.

Not sure how you got such shit milage though. I routinely get 18-19 around town, 20-21 hwy with 150000 miles. It's roughly the same as my taco, except my taco weighs 1000lb less. ( Although the taco definitely needs some tlc.)

    Oh well.

Ok, so you're happy and that's great.

Why is it so hard to believe that someone else is not so happy? And why does TW go apeshit every time someone says so?

Yeah - "Tacoma Owners and Enthusiasts", I get it.

It's not like ppl need to defend their purchase or a multi-billion dollar corporation just because someone expresses a negative viewpoint. I will agree that we see a lot of it on here.. but maybe, just maybe there ARE some issues.

But did you try the OVtune? I mean, it's only $600 and people are raving about it, cheap fix to get it into what sounds like a much more drivable state. For that matter, has anyone who has tried OVtune still not been satisfied and then parted with the truck?

I have not heard back from my dealer yet on what the final word is on my frame replacement but I do really like the idea of having two trucks now, it's starting to grow on me. But it is hard to fathom that even when my 2005 is pushing 6,000 pounds loaded I am still rarely seeing 4,000 rpms and the Gen-3 is in virtual hibernation until then, quite the delta in engine management expectations.

When did I ever judge whether or not you or Op were happy? I don't care if you're happy (no offense), but really im the one who spent the money on my truck. Op posted on an enthusiast website and not expect some kind of opposite response to his negative experience?

This kinda says it all. So TW is a forum where ideas can be exchanged, so long as they aren't negative towards the Tacoma? Again, I know what the TW banner says.
In my limited experience on here, that's how a lot of stuff gets sorted out - you discuss the problem areas.
Hell, I could care less if you're ecstatic about your purchase (kinda my point). That's great and I'm glad you like it. My experience sucked at first, but I took it upon myself to make it better, not bury my head in the sand and just submit to the "you bought the wrong truck" crowd.
Some people don't like the 3rd gen, and they post about it. Maybe they're looking for help, maybe not. It's not like OP is another Smitty lol.

I have a photo of that gas mileage graph on the head unit. My last trip in the truck before I got rid of it-- ~250 miles over about 3 hours. 13.5mpg at 77mph with a 15mph headwind.

My Xterra barely broke 15 MPG.

It was an Off-Road version with the higher suspension and the all-terrain tires. That may have had something to do with it.

For fucks sake, it’s a 6spd auto with taller gearing then the 2nd gen. Of course it shifts more! If the 2nd gen had the same transmission it would shift more too. That 4.0 wouldn’t pull 6th gear any better. I owned 2nd gens from 2005-2018 and logged at least 250k on them. It had a little low end torque but by no means was it a V8.

6th gear is overdrive, at 80mph it’s still at 2k RPM. At 80mph my 2nd gens would be pulling like 2500+ rpm. Put your truck S5 if you don’t want it go into overdrive.

New vehicles are all aiming for MPGs at the cost of fun factor. Unfortunately Toyota made it standard in the no fun mode. Switch to ECT and it’s a little more fun. Maybe they should have made ECT standard and have the option to put in in ECO mode. That’s how my wife’s old 2012 Honda CRV was. Standard was full power and ECO shifted early for better gas mileage.

There is nothing wrong with the 3rd gen auto mechanically. Some people like the way it drives and some don’t. Want it to shift less and go faster mash the pedal. It has power when needed, but if you cruise around it aims to get you better MPGs.

    Just 3 tons of fun!!!
Seems these posts come up nearly everyday. Do 3rd Gens really suck this bad?... or are that many new 3rd Gen owners picky bitches?... or is it a little bit of both?

Why all the emotion though? If I hate my truck (I don't), how is that making your life miserable? I mean, you don't have to read all this stuff. I'll admit I've seen my share of A/T fuckery in the OVTune threads. Meh, not my problem other than it delays M/T file development.. a lot!

For the record, it performs better than my 2nd gen and I am ok with that. Mpg whatever for those that dont like it? Sell it fast to take advantage of the resale. I sold my 2010 fast. They sell like hotcakes

I don't think 3rd gens are horrible, but there are things about them that are undesirable to some. There have been multiple TSBs that address driveability "issues", mostly all of which are focused on the auto trans. Toyota didn't do this randomly, they must have had significant feedback to make them act.

No, I fixed mine. No need to take a hit like that.
