Dude. Look at what you are writing.
You just agreed that gears are a torque multiplier right?
Here's what will happen. Let's say that this cat gets X torque at 5300 rpm. He will lower ration in rear diff thus multiplying torque output. Now transmission will shift to 5th (OD) which will effectively lower rpm. The end result is same torque at lower RPM.

    Hence a regear.

Did your rack come with a lube holder and a year of dealer supplied astroglide? If not I’d go
back and complain.....that dealer saw you coming a mile away.

Yes, but then the rear end will multiply torque even more in any given gear, thus putting out more power/torque.

Good points, but we’re not dealing with straight gear ratios and the engine power curve here. We’re dealing with Toyota’s mystery shifting logic based on torque and other variables in the 3rd gen that weren’t there in the second gen. And this where I bow out lol

Maybe if the dealer has a competant enough technician they would work with you on labor cost to re- gear. You provide the gears, install bits and pieces.

Guys, I'm an idiot. I didn't read the post title saying his truck won't shift out of 4th and thought his complaint was only the RPMs. I was wrong; a regear will address his complaint and get him out of 4th on the highway. :deadhorse:

Good job on making us all think up new ways to explain gearing

Now if we can explain why some folks insist on big tires for looks even though they won’t ever go off-road ...and not just avoid this problem

Wait.. can someone run down re-gearing again for me?

What’s the biggest tire size I can run without have to chop/cut/re-gear/get the same or better mileage than stock? Will a re-gear make the truck handle more like a lambo?

Fun thread! Maybe not for OP though

I think looks are a valid reason to lift a truck and put bigger tires on it. But you have be willing to accept the compromises that go along with that. I'm not so I rock the stock.

Never underestimate the power of the ''cool factor.'' It has dried up more wallets then a New Orleans stripper bar at Mardi Gras.

31.5 inches and not a mm more.
Agree, folks should do what they want to their trucks, no justification needed. Just dont complain when you go for that big tire look and you suddenly discover you need to regear and your gas milage goes down.
Fortunately Im past my cool factor years and into the old age years of function and practicality. Wife ended my stripper bar days too, harsh woman, refused to even let me bring a date to our wedding!

Cops around me would say go away little boy and find something else to do.

PS: Yes he's in 3rd and going faster than he knows .... BUT .... that's his problem not ours.

OP, is there anyone you know with a 3rd gen equipped like yours that has been regeared, so you could go for a ride with them to compare? Or find a TW member close to you that would volunteer to take you for a ride? Also, I guess if you paid 58 grand for a truck, you can afford the two grand to regear? Isnt re gearing around a grand an axle, not sure...

Hopeful the op does not find himself on america’s most wanted. Man is a rebel running 13 over the limit in a baby monster truck.

Lmao not sure where you live but 13 mph over the speed limit on the interstates I drive on isn’t uncommon. I hold it to 9 over or less. Same with most of the drivers I’ve seen in VA.
