You can't really overfill the rear diff unless you parked it facing down an incline. It's made to be filled up to the bottom of the fill hole. The stated capacity is ~4.2 quarts.

Since this is the internet and it's probably irrelevant I probably shouldn't mention that I'm 45 and have been spinning wrenches for the last 30+ years, but hey, what the hell. You only live once.

changed mine a few weeks back and just filled them till they started to leak out of the hole, being doing that for years ...no issues.

I know you know this but just for clarity, two plugs: drain plug and fill plug with overflow function when full.

1. Open fill plug.
2. Open drain plug and drain.
3. Close drain plug.
4. Put new oil in fill plug till it slowly trickles out of same plug. Replace plug.
5. Torque to spec.

Nothing to do with breather. OP has 30 years of wrenching, therefore we must respect him and assume he was on flat ground. Therefore, to overfill by 1/2 quart he would of had oil gushing out of the fill plug (i.e., overflow function) as he screwed the plug back in. Again, 30 years so I presume that did not happen. Goes back to scenarios A and B. Make sense?

Gotcha. U called it a valve so it through me for a loop. Then I was like How can a hole be faulty? Lol

You'd have to pump more in than immediately screw in the plug as it comes rushing out all around that plug and down your hands.

I’m sure they haven’t.. sounds like the crowd that pays somebody to do all the work for them

Thanks for the reminder OP, I share the same opinion that the rear diff is the most important one to change out early. I won’t bother with the front diff / tranny / tcase until 100k, most likely (regardless what the recommendation is, which I think is 60k)
