Absolutely love my 2017 I’ve had zero issues in 167k miles since buying it new… that said If I could I’d get the 2024 or hold off another year and get the 2025 after they work out the kinks. I’d also be keeping my 3rd gen if I buy a 4th gen

Sticker price and actual transaction price are not the same. For example, when the Bronco Raptor first came out, to get one without waiting a year, took about $120k.

True, demand will be through the roof when it first comes out but prices will normalize within a year of actual release. I expect MSRP to be no more than $54k.

I had been saving and planning on buying a Tacoma within the next two years. When all the specs finally dropped for the Gen 4, I immediately started looking for my perfect 2023. It took a couple of weeks, and I got exactly what I wanted fresh off the truck.

I don't mind the way the 24's look for the most part, but I wanted the old reliable, slightly underpowered V6 with the solid but pokey 6 speed transmission that would last for several hundred thousand miles. I will never be able to wrap my head around turbo 4 bangers in trucks. They may turn out to be awesome, and get better gas mileage, but I was looking for the proven track record. I'm old and stuck in my ways, so my truck should be too.

As someone who owns a 2020....I would wait until you can drive a 4th gen.

Wait for the 24s. One of two things will happen when you test drive it vs a 3rd gen. You like the 4th more, or you like the 3rd more. Go for an off lease CPO if you want the 3rd gen, or get the 4th if you want the 4th.

I like my truck, it drives fine, but I've driven second gens, and turbo 4 rangers.....I'd wait until you can get in a 4th and drive it and see which you want.

Look at how tight the rear legroom is with the shock absorber seats: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/4th-gen-tacoma-2024.734643/page-678#post-29201750

I think Toyota is positioning the Tacoma TRD Pro akin to hardcore ZL1/GT3 trims of some sport cars where they run a chassis stiffening brace through the rear seat area, i.e. expensive and low-volume.

Get a 2023. You can watch a few YouTube video real world reviews and know exactly what you are getting. There is an already established aftermarket to modify it to your liking/needs. 4th Gen isn’t there yet.

My vote goes to grabbing a 23 Pro and holding it until the 4G goes through its mid-generation update like 3G did with the 2020 models. This will allow Toyota to iron out all the kinks, plus waiting increases the probability that you'll have an "upgraded" 4G with all the new goodies before they move to the 5G (e.g., sought-after LED headlights with the 2020 upgrade).

Almost forgot 4G Pro is hybrid only. Hybrids tend to catch fire more often than gas vehicles. 4G isn't a true hybrid so you might be ok.

Maybe a 4R Pro in Underground color that still has the 1GR-FE, and manual transfer case.

Such a small hope but it would be awesome if they can figure out a manual for the hybrid (pro/trailhunter) at the refresh, Toyota has been filing a ton of new patents on MT's and maybe they were close but not in time for unveiling and start of production.

Random stuff. Oh! and converted to non ADD 4x4.
I love the 4th gen non sense fear mongering. If you have the funds for the 4th gen. Then it’s no issue to go back to the 3rd gen. Cheers!

Picked up my 3rd gen on Jan 4th 2016…. Been happy with it ever since. Sure some things were different but was nice getting some of the new features like no torque vs. the prior generation.

seriously… if you can wait go 24.

Both are (or assuming will be) decent trucks, however “safe” money lands squarely on the proven, post-refresh, V6 Gen3. Find an OR w LED’s and it’s probably all the truck you’ll need for the next five years. You’ll always get top dollar if/whenever you trade it.

Significant Gen4 upgrades include the updated TNGA-F safety structure and the hybrid’s 465lbft of twist. However, you will pay more, and you will have to wait a long while, particularly for the hybrids.

We see plenty of posters here making reasonable cases why you should run out and pay the the dealer markups to own one of the very first Gen4’s to roll off the lines at Baja. I’d personally advise to lay back a couple years & let them work the bugs out.

2023 - and while you're at the dealer buy me one too.
I'd wait on the 2024 for at least a year or two of production see how it shakes out.

^^^this. So glad I got one. If you want a manual there will not be one on the 2024 Pro. 2023 Pro with 6MT hands down for me.

Go with the 2023. It will be the last of the V6 engines. It’s a proven reliable truck without issues. You can get one now as opposed to waiting six months to a year.

Get 2023 while you still can land one new. I agree with the known entity, even with its issues, the 2022, 2023 seem to be good trucks,

I don’t think I’d touch the 4th gen before 2027, not with some of the issues I’m reading about with Tundras, maybe I’m wrong but there are some foundational issues to resolve.
