46k for 2023 trail edition straight off the truck. Of course have the added maintenance plan and extended warranty ( yes I know expensive) but it’s easier for me to budget.

By the way, I just yesterday purchased my warranty from Jerry Johnson at Midwest Toyota. He verified that you are able to cancel your warranty and then re-purchase one if you would like to do so. Save yourself minimum a few thousand dollars.

Basically paid full MSRP. A few dealers around here were over MSRP. For many, their allotments are sold out before they arrived.

I think those factory tonneau covers are constructed as one of the best. But the plastic fades. If you want to keep it looking nice, keep some, for lack of a better word oil on there or tonneau cover dressing.

I have a deposit on a 2023 TRDOR build date 4/9/23. The sales manager and I have agreement to sell for MSRP, plus destination charge ($1335), sales tax and doc fee ($699). The only added options are floor mats with door sill protectors ($258). I am driving 3 hours to Johnson City , TN to get outside of the Southeast Distributorship and avoid avoid extra costs for things I don’t want. It seems MSRP is a good deal. I plan on paying cash. The sales manager said he wanted to discuss financing options. He said he can offer me an incentive to finance. Save me on price and he makes some money from Toyota finance. I could get the loan and pay it off in a month since no penalty for early payment. Has anyone ever done this? How much discount could I expect if I choose to finance and pay off early? I assume Toyota finance offers the dealership $$ to endorse financing vehicles. They kick back $$ to dealer to sell loans and the dealer shares some of that with the customer for taking the loan. They must be assuming no one pays off the loans early? When the loan is paid off early, Toyota finance doesn’t collect the entire amount of interest over the life of the loan. Wonder how they reconcile this?

Former sales director, albeit 8 years ago so some things have changed but for most part industry is still the same.

Toyota gives the dealer either a flat for financing with them (could be as small as $400 as high as $1,400. I only worked with Ford Credit as a captive lender). They could also make reserve (i.e. sell you at 5.49, buy rate is 3.49 so they make 2% on whatever amount financed).
either way with all lenders I’ve seen if you payoff before 90 days the dealer is charged back the amount they received (reserve or flat).
If you pay off early you don’t pay the whole interest charge, you only pay interest on the 30/60/90 days it takes you to pay off loan. If he offers you a $750 discount to finance and you agree to pay off in 45 days figure the interest paid in that 45 days. It will probably be very small and should be worth it to you. Just make sure everything is clear on early payoff, you can payoff as soon as you get the account but if the dealer is doing you a solid (up to you on if you decide to be true to your word), hold up to it. I always worry if I have service issues I have a good relationship with the dealer.

Very interesting. I’ve never actually run into this situation. Mostly just the reverse where people think bringing cash into a dealership is going to give them some advantage when it’s the opposite for the reasons you posted. 1. I’ve heard of plenty of people paying loans off early and no penalty. 2. Hard to say what discount to expect. Maybe he would be willing to split the kick back. Assuming Toyota would split the interest with the dealer. All conjecture.
-In 2017, when I negotiated my father-in-law‘s RAV4, they offered 23,000 for bring your own financing or 25,000 for the 0% interest they were offering so that gives you a bit of an idea although not exactly the same.
Someone else will probably chime in who has worked in dealer financing offices? I’m surprised that the dealer flat out said he would work with you in that way. Nice work

Hogleg918, thanks for the info. Yes, I told the Sales mgr I would consider any offer to save me money but I was clear I would pay off loan within a month. The right to pay off early without penalty is stipulated in the finance contract. Everyone I ever read is clear but a I suppose could vary by State. If I live in SC but buy in TN, I don’t know what state laws apply but the finance contract must stipulate. It almost seems like too much hassle to do but the sales mgr sounded like they do this routinely. But IMO it seems like it harms Toyota finance? Their assumptions are undermined unless (like you said) they charge back the dealer for the incentive it received if the loan is paid off early. In that case, why would the dealer do it? I guess there is no loss to Toyota finance but the net profit for the dealer is reduced by the incentive they gave me. So basically the sales manager gives me a discount that he is ok losing if I pay off early. Which means he could have given me the discount without the financing hassle. I guess they just play the odds that I won’t pay it off early? If he is ok with the reduced profit, no harm-no foul. If I don’t pay off early, everyone wins. I would definitely take a $750 discount and pay off in a month. The interest charge for 1 month at 6% on $40,000 is only $200.

You’re correct, there are no laws that say you can’t payoff asap. I see it more of a gentleman’s agreement that you keep it for x amount of days. As a desk manager I would never trade off potential profit for guaranteed profit. However they may as a dealer group require a certain percentage of deals to be sent to TFS. I worked at a dealer that did about 150-225 new units a month with finance penetration of about 70-75% (meaning 25-30% customers paid cash or had USAA who won’t participate with dealership lending). He probably wants to keep his finance team happy as a cash deal they make $0 and that can actually hurt the finance guy as it brings down their PVR and probably cuts their total commission 2% for every tier they drop.
Lot of info that may not be useful, just trying to let people know the inner workings of how deals are structured.

Hogleg, I appreciate it very much. I will be straight-up with Sales mgr and be clear about my attentions. I will let him know my understanding of how each party potentially benefits. If he is ok with his guaranteed profit (me pay off early) and how that affects the finance team, I’ll let that be his decision.

Thanks for the tip! I didn't want any dealer or factory-installed options, but now that I have it, I like the tonneau. (Secure storage with the locking tailgate, and it helps a little on the mileage.)

Make sure when you keep it wet to use a non silicone product but with a water based solution. This way the sun can’t cook it making the plastic look like crap after a short while. Also might want to keep the tonneau cover unlocked at night if parked on the street and the bed empty if the cover has a lock on it. The locks are generally cheap and easy to break into. I refuse to use a topper or any tonneau cover anymore, and friends who still have them don’t store anything at night anymore either. Too many broken locks and rear windows smashed on their toppers.
