The wiring harness on your truck should be ready to accept the brake controller of your choice. It does not come with one from Toyota.

Also, your owners manual will tell you the info you want.

The truck is probably pre-wired for a trailer brake controller but does not have one installed from the factory. Etrailer.com will have a good selection brake controllers with plug and play connectors. Im sure somewhere on here there is a write up for installs and where to find the connector

    Ouch, a 21 footer? Weight?

You honestly don't want to hear what honest people will tell you and that is to get a domestic truck or a Tundra.

And yes, you need a brake controller.

And keep it out of OD towing.

I have a 23 TRD OR and installed the Redarc Liberty Pro and it's great. I tow my 4000 travel trailer easy as long as I keep the revs up to like 3k when going up hills. There's several YouTube vids on the install. I like the Red Arc because it works fantastic and looks factory. You don't need the RedArc Elite unless you plan to tow an off road trailer.

Check out my build thread linked in my signature for pics, some towing lessons learned, and other stuff and be sure to check out this post for pics. You will see where your brake controller will need to connect to.
