Is it generally agreed if you are not towing, but doing off road driving in addition to normal on-road driving, you don’t need an additional external transmission oil cooler? In other words, is the auto transmission cooled adequately for a TRDOR if not towing? If you follow the maintenance schedule you shouldn’t have any premature auto transmission failures?

I have a 2021 off road. I have towed several hundred miles around 4K lb. I have spent some time off road. Zero issues.
Some here think they are smarter than the engineers who designed this truck. So far, after reading thousands of posts, I have yet to see evidence of anyone being smarter than the Toyota guys.

I have a 2016 TRDOR with the external trans oil cooler. The most I have towed is about 2500 lbs no further than 90 miles. I am off road a good bit. I have not had any transmission problems in 60,000 miles. Trans fluid still same color as the WS fluid in bottle. I am considering getting a 2023 with no external cooler. If I do I hope the transmission will perform as well as the one I have.

I think your truck is missing a bit more than the tranny cooler. Lol

Yes, my truck right now has no engine! The repair of the timing chain cover oil leak has necessitated removal of the hood and engine. But my engineless 2016 TRDOR has an external auto transmission oil cooler.

I added two external coolers to my 03 Tundra and saw about 5 degree response. Not overall but my scnagauge never said 219 again. 212-215 at times so was it worth the effort? Probably not. Will I add anything to the taco. No.

So, my 2023 premium OR brags about having the same auto trans cooler that my '58 Chevy Biscayne had?

This was done on a Tundra as described in this video (Cooler Install):

Can you see the two white tubes coming out of the thermostat? (outlet & inlet) at 15:40. They are the same ones on this photo from my Sport:

    thumbnail_IMG_7728_1f1dcc3d6bb8951532cf252231e75f8190a1ddd4.jpg

I just have to follow that tube to see where it leads to find the Trans Cooler portion.

went for the blackout package this time
I'm taking your words to heart, to reassure me. I just ordered a 2023 Blue Crush Access cab with TRD off road and towing package. I traded a really nice 2017 same truck, with the external cooler. I tow a light horse trailer with sheep in it. Sure hope the new truck handles it ok. No issues with the 2017.

I pulled 3400 lb dual axle from SC to PA this past July with no issue. Just pushed the ECT button and drove.

Get a Scangauge or similar to monitor your trans temps and you won't need to take anyone's word for it. I towed a dual axle enclosed trailer from NY to SC with mine and had to watch the temps the entire time to make sure I was keeping it below 220
