Keep your current Tacoma. A car is always a bad investment since the value always diminishes. If its not broken, don't fix it. Save your money and have it in case any emergencies come up when you would otherwise be struggling. College and life in general is a little bit easier when you have one less thing to worry about(money).

Me personally I'd take some of the money and freshen up the Tacoma. If you have any mechanical issues, i.e. powertrain, AC, heating or suspension you could go ahead and fix those. If you go the bike route get something big enough that you can put hard bags on. They'll give you more options for carrying things. Sounds like you've got things figured out. Just keep your head on straight and you'll be good to go. Good luck in school and thanks for your service.

Kidding - sorry to assume, but I think it would be smart to wait til you are accustomed to your new cash flow before making a big purchase. It is easy to wait but harder to undo.

I have the urge to spend a lil before I wont be spending any haha...

why are you keeping a secret as to what you are doing?
is it gay porn kind of art?
of course people are going to explain a budget to you, you have 20k and you're talking about how you wont have much money to live starting soon, with us not knowing exactly what you're doing, it sounds like a bad idea to spend it on a depreciating asset.

Not at all meant to bash you, but it's hard to give our opinions when we don't know what's going on.

LOL gay porn?!...No I am not keeping it a secret but what I am doing doesnt really have anything to do with my question, except that I wont be making much money. I am a begining writer hoping to turn novelist. With a full time job and school I just don't have the time to dedicate to my writing as I would like.

And I'm not doing it bc it is a good financial choice, I am doing it bc if I don't try I imagine I will always regret it.

get through school first - life can throw you some curveballs, wait until you're done and working before throwing money at a car. you'll be living on the edge - keep it put away for true emergencies. most people in this country don't have that kind of money laying around, you are fortunate. don't let it burn a hole in your pocket.

    http://20somethingfinance.com/average-retirement-savings/

" According to the Employee Benefits Research Institute’s 2009 Retirement Confidence Survey, 53% of workers in the U.S. have less than $25,000 in total savings and investments. The typical American household (headed by a 43 year old) has just over $18,000 in savings! That’s a scary number."

I agree with Tarheelz, keep the truck, do minor things to keep it looking good now, save the bulk to do some up keep as needed.

Lol this is my dilemma too! I start school in a couple months and am dying to change my lift kit before I start. I haven't spent hardly anthing over neccessity in months and have been making sure to save a good amount for gas and any necessary repairs (tires brakes oil changes) and not to mention insurance!

Add me to the list of responsible suggesters. Invest it. By the time you get to it you will have a nice down payment on a house/condo.

    Now I get it.

    can you work part time?
Even so, I'd just bank the 20k, when you get a novel published, reward yourself with a new truck! but you haven't earned it yet ;)
