My truck has just over 21K miles on it now and it is dues for it's first oil change since I bought it in Jan. What are the pros/cons of going synthetic now, or should I wait. And what weight oil do our trucks take again??? Thanks in advance guys/gals...

I'd just switch to synthetic. Only downfall is that synthetic oil is kinda pricey but I think its well worth it. 5w-30.

You went 21k miles on a brand new engine without changing the oil

Ummmmmm, I'm pretty sure that's very very very bad idea :what: Your first change should be 3-5k miles then after that if using conventional then every 5k and if synthetic then 10k, although I use synthetic and won't take it past 7k. I'd be concerned if this is really your first oil change

Oh and to answer, synthetic is better. Little more $$ but last twice as long. And its about 5.xx quarts with a filter change of 5-w30

I'm wondering why you waited till 21,000 miles also....It's every 5,000 miles or 6 months (which ever comes first) while your under warrenty. Use 5w30.

Maybe a typo on OP's part? I hope that you went on the advice of someone at your dealership(wrong advice) because there is nothing in the manual or anyone on this board is going to tell you to go 21k without an oil change. Especially, your first oil change.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
You are kidding 22,000 miles before first change, right? Should I even bother saying you should change out the trans and rear end?

Ok everyone, take a breath and stop jumping to conclusions. He just bought in January so you think he drove 21k miles since then? probably not. I am not 100% sure but my guess would be he bought the truck used ;)

*Note to self* Not to buy your truck if you put it up for sale during at time in it's life time. You could have done possible damage or some major premature wear because your original oil has been in there for that long.

I hate to let you guys think I am totally retarded...I bought the vehicle used in January this year with >17k on it, sorry for not being more clear, but it made for the most responsive thread I've started here yet!!! I see the MOBIL1 full synthetic 5W30 is high mileage, is there 5W30 full syn. that is not "High Mileage" or does this not matter...
