I just got my ridge grapplers installed today. I have been a typical lurker on TW and never posted but hopefully this helps you guys out wanting to know about the sidewall plies.

My tires aren't pizza cutters but pretty close. LT265/75/16 with SCS F5 16x8 -25.

Should be no need with the SEMA/255-80-17 combo. I never tried flexing before my alignment to get max caster (with stock control arms) though.

Any rubbing or trimming with the 255/80/17 on a leveled 3rd gen?

I feel like I’m responding more than I should to this thread, but wth.

You will absolutely need to trim plastic and either remove the inner fender skirt or heat mold it. That’s the case whether you’re lifted 3 inches or not at all. The amount of trimming heavily depends on your alignment’s caster and the wheels you choose to run.

I thought this was counter to what many have experienced; i.e. 255/85/16 or 255/80/17 seem to fit the TRD OR with very little, and often no rubbing? Assuming correct and accommodating alignment. I've not done it myself, but it's on my radar to do once my stockers wear out.

The key component to the success you're referring to is wheel specs.

Most of the folks that are running 255/85/16 with little rubbing are also rolling with the 16" OEM Off-road wheels. These are only like 6" with +25 offset and 5" backspacing. (see the below thread)
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/put-255-85-16s-on-stock-or-wheels-and-suspension.491079/

Wheels with less offset/backspacing and are wider will have more contact with body parts, regardless of how pristine the alignment. Enter plastic trimming/molding/modifying and/or metal cutting to clear the tires while cycling the suspension.

I have no clue what the comparable 17" OEM Sport wheel specs look like, but I'd have to speculate if they are similar to the Off-roads that they would garnish like results with a 255/80/17 tire.

Yep, most of the commentary about successful swaps is on the OR, which I believe has a narrower rim.

The wheel width is a factor, but minor. The offset and backspacing of said wheel set the stage.

So does the Pro have an offset that’s less favorable to clearance than the OR?

Depends on the Pro wheel you're referring to. I think the Tacoma 16" Pro has +13mm offset, and the 17" 4Runner Pro that @Marcmtb1 is running has +4mm offset. Both will stick out further than the stock OR wheel. Not a ton, but enough to create some rubbing if you wrap them with a true 33" tire. This contact can easily be mitigated with minor cutting/molding of plastic.

The moral of the story is...if folks don't want to cut their truck a little, they shouldn't try to stick a 33" tire on a truck designed around a ~31" tire :notsure:

NO CMC done. - I will say the SEMA wheels offset stick out about 1/2 inch further than the stock 16" offroad wheels but are still 7 inch wide wheels. This works well with the skinny 33 inch tires and a mild lift.

What mud flaps are you running? I wanted to go up in tire size but don't want to toss the mudflaps.

Just installed my lift yesterday and put my tires on today. Bilstein 5100s all around with OME 888 coils, medium duty Dakar’s and SPC ucas. 255/80/R17 Cooper ST Maxx. The tires rubbed the mudflaps slightly when making tight turns so I removed them and that fixed the issue.B0D0B433-66B6-43FB-9CD8-60EA4EB8D8A8.jpg 6DD72B29-3812-47D2-8CFA-F0F69BEE050F.jpg C7A0CA08-B0D0-471A-A22F-4EB58F794D31.jpg

Hey all! What factors, beside wheel diameter and sidewall, change if I opt for Cooper ST Maxx 255/80/17 vs 255/85/16. I have a 2017 Taco TRD 4x4 with Kings, Icon UAC and leaf springs; overall about 2" lift. Plan is for SCS Stealth 6, so there is a difference in backspace/offset from 4.30 BS for 17s vs 3.5 BS for 16s. Plus the .5" extra width for the 17s. Seems to me that the 16s would give a pretty aggressive stance. Am I missing anything? More or less rub with one or the other?
